It's a weight thing, that's why companies run singles. My truck and trailer weight empty is about 2500 pounds heavier than my Millis truck and trailer with singles. Part of that weight difference is my APU, though. But Millis runs singles because those beer cans aren't filled with feathers lol :)

No doubt about that. Running heavy in the hills ain't fun. But at least your trucks are geared better than mine. My truck is an absolute dog in the mountains. She likes the flat roads lol.

It's all about the weight savings. I think it's something like 400 pounds per axle in weight savings. With all the heavy loads we pull (beer, in particular) Millis wants to be able to promise customers that we can haul more than the other guy for less money. I hate them too, though. Like you said, they don't track as well as duals, and I cannot see them in my mirrors nearly as well when I'm crossing scales that weigh by the axle and I can't see my drives when backing under a trailer. It's annoying at best.

I thought the woman at the scale house on NB I75 between Albany and Atlanta was gonna whip my butt one day because I kept overshooting her scale.

I love it when I'm heavy and I'm pulling Monteagle and still passing other trucks. Almost makes me think I'm in a big truck for a minute.

That makes me think of this... which I also think of every time I am pulling a heavy beer load.
