My very first day driving when out with my trainer I went down Fancy Gap in fog and drizzle. Pulled into the rest area somewhere there just after it bottoms out and she almost had to pry my hands off the steering wheel with a crowbar.

Amen to that. Look at my last post. You can avoid 460, and it doesn't add a lot of miles.

I keep meaning to check to see how many extra miles it would be to take 64 from Beckley out to 81 instead of 460.

Wanna hear something funny? I actually used 460 as a detour once. It was when all of that construction was going on on I77 at the WV/VA state line. Lots of chatter on the CB about a 20+ mile long backup south of the tunnel. So what did I do? I went up 81 and grabbed 460 West, knowing how bad that one section is.

Not sure if I'll never do it again, but I think the back-up will have to be longer than 20 miles before I do it again.

Yeah I'm familiar with going that way. I'm just not sure if I hate 460 enough to going that far out of the way to avoid it, especially going east where I don't have to worry about those rock cliffs.

When the construction was on the northbound side by the tunnel, taking 460 was required for trucks. We had to exit as soon as we got out of the tunnel. They handed out a bunch of tickets to truckers that ignored it.

So, I just got a load that uses that part of 460. If I continue down 77 and grab 81 to 220 via 581 in Roanoke, it adds 30 miles. That's it. That'll translate to roughly 4 gallons of fuel. I'll have to deal with hills and curves no matter what, but this path is much friendlier. That 4 gallons, with my discounts, will add up to about 13 bucks. Let's say for the sake of argument it goes to 5 gallons. Now I'd be up to 16.50 or so. Big whoop. My truck, my fuel, my rules. 460 can take a hike. This is a heavy load, I don't have the time or patience for that garbage road.
