I think it helps not to look like a bum, including your truck. In the last three years I had three Inspections; 2 level 1 and 1 level 2; all clean.
The Pre - pass could be a shot in the foot; if there is a long period without inspection, are they not going to red blink you onto a scale?
When I was younger they were pulling me over more often than now. So perhaps more grey hair and more daddy look helps too.

The easiest way to limit your interaction with dot is to avoid dot. That’s how i do it. I’m coming up on 3 years with my numbers & only have 2 inspections. Drive where they’re not. Lol7-UP, whoopNride, stwik and 3 others Thank this. -
I have no choice but drive through the scale house, when it is open. The one I have to go through with the old log truck is always open at least one load a day, except for his day off and weekends. I take them out there at least once a year and ask for an inspection.
FlaSwampRat and PE_T Thank this. -
I used to average a DOT inspection every 3 years. Now I get 3 per year. And all are random from being pulled over.
To avoid being pulled over:
Mudflaps, lights, and a clean dash and truck.
To avoid tickets:
Polite, ease of paperwork displayed, upkeep on truck.
More than a few times I get let off because the DOT officer can see many new parts.PE_T and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Under my authority I have PrePass, and it works the same as before. The bypass rate is about the same. However, for the first time in my trucking career I got a level 1 inspection this year, but I believe it was because there was a national DOT inspection at the time and also because my PrePass did not go through when I exited a freeway where the PrePass detector happened to be before the exit only. Anyone exiting and re-entering the freeway in this (rare) case cannot use their PrePass.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -

In the early 90's, I worked as a mobile tech nationwide in Germany. Back then, maps, city plans and other things were common to be found on the dash, not only in my vehicle.
The boss didn't like it. "This mess can be an idicator for a customer how you do your job. Clean it up."
Now almost 30 years later, I still stick to that advice. My dash is clean, except a mixed cable salad of charging cables for different devices, which I don't like.
Remove the trash off the footwell on the passenger side. It's visible through the side window in the door.
I just had a discussion with a friend of mine. If I were a DOT officer, I would look out for drivers like that.Dino soar, FlaSwampRat, D.Tibbitt and 2 others Thank this. -
