Hey all, I'm looking for a new radio and came across this Mirage model. I'm not really much into radios, I've had my Cobra since '95 and it has been fine. I've recently started a job where the other drivers apparently don't like to be found when they are talking and it was suggested to me that I get a different radio. I'm not looking to spend a ton of money and this one, from what I've seen, might fit the bill. Any of you other drivers maybe running one and can recommend it? If not then maybe just some other not-so-expensive ideas would also be welcomed. Because of the type of driving this is we all run together for the most part and being able to communicate with the rest of the trucks is probably a good idea. Thanks for the help....Al
Mirage 36HP, any info?

do you know where they are talking..lsb-usb..or where? the radio you are looking at is nice..and has good sound..not the highest output...you might not want to talk
where they are lol..might not be 11 meter..and with out a ham ticket..lets just say..not good idea -
Yeah I'm aware of the ticket part, I've been kicking around getting one for a while but something always comes along and it gets put to the wayside. This might be a good reason now. I'm not sure where they are talking, was just told I needed a converted radio with upper/lower sidebands. I'm just figuring it would be good to have one at least to listen in and if need be to communicate. I'm not looking to get on anybody's bands or anything. The Mirage looks to be in my price range right now. I've been home for a few weeks now but I figure on talking to a few of the other drivers once I go back. I've seen a few galaxies and connex models so I think I'm on the right trail as far as type of radio.

Mirage, Galaxy, Connex, all have the same board, not much difference in them except some cosmetic stuff and maybe a couple different, mostly unimportant, features. Performance and reliability are the same. I have one of each, all good radios.

Cool, Thank you Mike. I have seen it online for $179 and didn't think that was too bad of a price.

Find out if there using side band or not ( probley not, most likely ) . If not, you can add channels to your radio a lot cheaper than buying a new radio. Just an option.

There are 40 ch ....
as for SSB there still are 40 .....

Hopefully I'll be back at it another week or so, then I can get some more info. I'm only going on what I posted above.

FWIW, Rather than convert a 40 channel radio so you can have uppers and lowers, I think you are better off to just get the export radio and be done with it. JMHO
There is a difference between "upper and lower" channels and upper and lower sideband. You can operate completely legal on upper and lower sideband within the 40 channels on a CB radio. Upper and lower channels refer to channels below and above the legal 40 channels assigned to CB. Because of the hassle of tuning in side band transmissions, I'll bet your fellow drivers are operating on the "upper and lower channels" rather than upper and lower sideband. These terms are easily confused by those new to the CB and by many in the trucking world. The Connex, Galaxy type radios are easily converted to operate on the upper and lower channels, and are commonly used by truck drivers to do just that. Not to confuse further, but you can also talk on upper and lower sideband on the upper and lower channels......in fact every channel has a upper and lower sideband, if your radio is a sideband radio. My guess is, if you are running a radio in a truck, you probably don't need a sideband radio. Get a Gen. Lee or a Connex 3300HP and you will have all the channels you will ever need. (sideband radios generally are a little higher in price.)Last edited: Jan 26, 2012
