Misdemeanor

My felony is sealed, I wouldn't have been able to go into the army or work for roadway or walmart with a felony. The only company that gave me some flack aout it was JB hunt in 04. It was a good thing I didn't complete there orentation and got sent home.

I returned and got on with roadway. Witch was great because I hated otr and still do.

But for anyone seeking employment don't ever stop trying just because of a felony. I've had some decent paying gigs with a conviction.

 

We had some trustees at the jail that I knew were good folks, from DUI man slaughter to murder. A lot of them committed crimes when they were drunk or high. These were guys who were very respectful, hard working and salt of the earth types. I would gladly give them a job if I was i the position to hire them when they got out of prison, knowing the true person and not the person who made a bad decision with lasting consequences.

 

The thing to remember about convicts is that they either screwed up or were living the lifestyle.

The screw ups usually have or had an issue with impulse control. Whether exacerbated by chemicals or not. These guys usually figure it out and don't come back.

The ones living the lifestyle usually can't stay away from the stupid for very long... They get a thrill or something from it. It's like an addiction in and of itself.

That's why "case by case" can be your best friend. It is also a clue as to what you need to sell your prospective employer on: That you touched that very hot stove and don't want to repeat the experience.

 

I always had heard that was the case, but a friend of mine (who is a convicted felon and turned his life around years ago) told me he had no problem going into Canada since his felony was over 10 years old. Granted, he's not a truck driver, so I'm not talking about him taking a load into Canada. Those rules could be different. He traveled there for business or vacation or whatever.

I'm not sure whether they changed the rules up there at some point to be more lenient, or if the whole "lifetime felon ban" was what we call a "trucker story." Part of the whole thing I used to hear about Canada was that a DUI conviction was considered a felony up there despite being a misdemeanor here in the U.S., and thus was included in the "lifetime ban."

I would suggest contacting their Customs or State Department equivalent to be sure. If I find any official info from the Canadian government I will post links to it.

 

Trucking, the only job where they want you to be squeaky clean to get hired and then you're expected to break the law. I always got a kick out of that.

Oh well, after Dec. 18 that will change I guess. About the drive time anyway. Line 4 though...
