I had a HTC EVO rooted and would occasionally use it as a wireless hotspot but the problem with CDMA (Sprint, Verizon) every time you would get a call it would kick you off the net. I found it was a lot less of a hassle to pay the $50 per month for a separate device. I was also worried about dropping the unlimited I had with Sprint until I figured out I was only using about 2gb per month at the most so the 5gb I get with Verizon isn't bad. They do offer 10gb per month for $80 if you need more. I had no issues with Sprint, was with Nextel then Sprint since 1997 but Verizon was WAY faster when I did a speed test.
