I have orientation with a company set up for February 21. In the meantime I got hired at a job and I start Monday, February 5(not CDL related work). How should I tell them that I’m not gonna be at work (to make it to orientation in 3 weeks) but I also don’t want to close the door on the job that I have in case I’m not hired by the company orientation is with?

Without knowing the CDL carrier in question that's a tough question to really answer correctly.

Also -- do you already have a CDL?

If so -- what endorsements (if any) do you also have?

    What is your zip code?

The carrier I am leaving for is Western Express. Yes I have CDL A. No endorsements, no restrictions.

For now, don't say anything. Wait until you pass orientation and are hired with the company Feb. 5th.
This situation happens every day, so don't worry about it.
Companies are used to drivers not showing up for orientation.

You might want to tell us the name of both companies, someone might have some insight and help you with this decision. Remember that just because a recruiter tells you something it’s not always true.

"Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan Stan, no need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me", this is probably a new drivers worst scenario, who to choose? Just because you have an orientation scheduled, I don't think you are under any obligation to them. I would however, politely inform them, they are used to it, but whatever you do, DON'T leave them hanging. I don't know much about WE, they get picked on a lot, but all the megas do. I say you have time, check out what WE has to offer you, if it's better THEN inform the other company. Good luck, let us know how it works out, eh?

The above replies are exactly right.
As to the title of the thread, some things are kind of nice when they are tight, money is not one of them.

See how job starting the 5th is before you tell job on 21st you wont be there. If 1st one is bad choice, you have plan b ready to activate. If 1st one is good after first week, call plan b
