This is a 1980 Transtar II, the last of that body style and the first new truck I ever drove. It took me over Monteagle a few times back then. No air ride, but it did have A/C and power steering.

Monteagle claims another one today.....

Not anymore. I'd say Black Mountain NC is the one to watch in the southeast, more prone to weather too.

How do you go about lifting the cab to check the oil on a cabover? What transmission speeds were common back then? Did they use 18 speed transmissions?
-
The Peterbilt 362 cabovers I drove had a little door on the front and a 4 foot long dipstick in the fillertube. You only had to lift the cab for repairs, but if you did it had a hydraulic hand pump that lifted the cab.camaro68 Thanks this.

The COE that I drove...
Either in the front or the rear you have dipstick. And it's LONG....you learn how to twist it so it coils up as you pull it out.
There is also a lock you release on the backside, then you use a jack and tilt the cab forward when you had to get at the engine.
Just make sure the cab is either cleaned out....or EVERYTHING is secured to not fall forward onto the windshield/floor.camaro68 Thanks this. -
If I'm remembering correctly (I was 6 - 8 years old) his was a 79. I was going thru pictures the other day, I'll have to scan it. Black with silver accent stripes. i shared many many miles with him, riding next to him on the doghouse just so I could see everything he was doing.

It's a good way to get a pitted windshield replaced.
MNdriver Thanks this. -
Here's a nice looking 1980 Transtar II. I'd like to go to a truck show and see some of these older semi's someday. http://www.american-ag.com/igsbase/...=8981&StartRow=1&GnavID=9&SnavID=82&TnavID=42

I see a few Transtars every now and then shuttling trailers across the border. Along with the bulk of the old Schneider and JB Hunt fleet.
