I did it all the time. Once I wrapped the needle around on an old cabover KW with a hundred on the speedometer.
One day, after doing that, I stopped to eat at the old truckstop at the 100. When I came back out to the truck I had a flat steering tire. Scared me to death and never did it again.airforcetoo Thanks this. -
I ran out of Milledgeville in '82 pulling a van when BT bought us out. That truck was part of the new batch when they opened up the yard in Cuba AL.

That's a good story. J&M had a yard in Shoals IN. I bet we have met before or at least passed one another back then.

i have been traveling down monteagle for years. never once had smoking brakes at the bottom. its all about managing your speed, stab braking when needed and letting the brakes cool between using them.
and if the brakes were actually on fire, stopping is the worst thing to do. the flames usually dont start until you have stopped. rolling on down the road would have cooled them off much faster than stopping. i havent seen a truck in the kitty litter yet though. i know it happens, but i have never seen one buried in the sand. -
Wow, I took a road test with Ploof back in 77 and walked away. I was still in the Navy and they wanted me as part time for $4 an hour. The truck was junk and to me anyone that requires to use the pre-heat to start the engine in the summer heat didn't show me much either. So I was really dumb and went to work for Sav-A-Stop working for PDS. I don't if you know them but they worked me every Fri-Sun at 12 1/2 cents a mile. I got the miles and if the truck broke down in any of the 7 states we ran I could either get it fixed or replaced by Ryder. That guaranteed me back at the Navy Mon morning. I know I was in their junk truck because I talked to a few of the older guys and you did have better trucks. Better pay too.

2 weeks ago there was one at the very top of the first runaway ramp. I still don't know how he got there.
