one more thing, don't buy that copper clear plastic coated cable,it turns green with age from the sun and doesn't work after awhile, all the techs I have talked to know this,I used to belong to a big cb club in ma. we had 35 cbrs in a 20 mile raduis, with 1000 watt kickers, that antenna you have on your bronco looks like the ones we homemade in the 60's,ha' ha',maybe you should put a 102 whip on it with a load, you won't have to worry about low bridges if you have any out there.

Im very, very happy for you. All this means nothing to me. I'm telling you that you are mistaken.

    Wanna test your friend?

Ask him what capacitive skin effect is. This is really basic so he should know it even if he is 1/10 as good as you think he is.

Capacitive Skin Effect describes the tendency of current to travel on the skin of the wire at higher frequencies.

Most CB shops can't answer this simple and basic question. I'll bet your friend does as well.

I dont care what your friends have told you over the last 38 years. They are not experts and the guy who sells Monmkey Mades is gonna say it is the best. Just like Stryker says his is the best and the Monkey Made is junk.

They are both quarter wave loaded antennas and any 5/8 wave loaded antenna will spank it.

Any of the Hams here will tell you I am speaking the truth. Are you interested in what technologies were pioneered by Hams? Radio, TV, Computers, Wind Power, Solar Power, The interent, Cell Phones to name a few. If it is electronic and high tech today, it was pioneered by Hams. Did you know that cell phone you use everyday is not a phone? It is a radio.

Do a google search on antenna theory. You'll learn allot.

See, I really don't care what you believe and weather it is right or wrong. I do care however when you give bad information. Even when you are trying to help somebody. You should always make sure you are correct when you try to instruct another. Otherwise you are just propagating a myth.

On to you real world antenna review...........This was done on an antenna test range with a calibrated RF Field Strength Meter correct? If not it means absolutly nothing. You have to figure in Terain differences, reciever differences. There are too many variables in you scenario to call it proof.

Think about it driver.........and do some research.

BTW, 20 miles is peanuts. Any Ham can take a simple piece of wire, throw it in a tree and talk around the world. On 300mW (1/3 of a watt). We do things like this daily.

Who is your friend with the CB SHop. PM me his phone number and I'll test him on basic Electronics and Basic Antenna and RF theory for ya. If he passes I'll add him to my list of "Good Guys".

I almost forgot, Livewire is an idiot. Last I heard his shop went under and he opened the 12 Volt shop across the street.

I didn't mean to offend you but the monkey antenna I'm talking about is not a 1/4 wave antenna. It weighs more than all of them, you need a very heavy duty mount. Live wire is in all the trucking publications that mean anything, they are the best around in usa. I'm sure my friend knows everything that you know,he started in us army cummunications and has been to numerous tech schools , He works on tvs, dvds, stereos ,mostly cbs now. Judging by that bronco and base looking ground plane on it,I really didn't,and still not sure what you know. nobody that i know of would have published that picture to all to see. I don't speak as experience I spend my life out here on the road and most of my friends and the super truckers out here run monkey antennas, they have 100,000 to 150,000 petes and kws. money is no object and they want the best,I guess they are all dumb, that's all I got to say. Why don't you have an expedition in your driveway with your ham address on it. have a nice night. what are your call letters on ham,I'll call you this weekend from my techs house.

If your tech has the background you say he has, then he knows his stuff. Then we really have no proof of that do we?

Don't like that antenna? I love it. It is a home brewed 1/2 wave rotatable dipole. (Ground plane? You really don't know much about radio, do you) Cut for 6Meters (50.100 MHz to be exact). If you were as smart as you say you are, you'd know that is a VHF frequency and less prone to propagation then your CB is (that means your CB is more likely to talk more skip). I've made 2,000 mile contacts with it.

I make 20 mile contacts simplex with my Yaesu VX-6R handheld (walky talkie for you driver) 5W out on high power.

BTW, Simplex means without the aid of a repeater. Like your CB.

Don't like my BroncoII? That is your prerogative. Do a web search and you'll that there are thousands of us who love 'em. I'll never sell mine. Your Expedition comment is funny. A buddy of mine owns one. Awesome on the highway and I pull him out every time we go off-roading together.
I pull out Jeeps, heaps and a few Chevies too. That is why we love them. They are awesome off-road. I am very proud of my Bronco II and post pictures all over the net.

On to your comment on the Monkey Made not being a 1/4 wave antenna because "By golly, it is the heaviest antenna out there, DOH!!!". Think about what your saying driver. We are talking about the electrical wavelength of the antenna not the weight.

Live Wire is an idiot and if you'll do a google search, you’ll see his ineptitude is famous

I too spent most of my life on the road. I also have a very strong electronics background that includes some schooling as well, ownership of a CB Shop, a computer shop, now I am onto building antennas and refubishing old antique Heathkit Ham Radios.

I have seen lots of idiots running around in large cars with big antennas on them. Yup, I just got out of one of those large units myself. I can tell you that many smart people drive large cars. Lotsa dumb ones too.

BTW, you should have heard some of the comments I got when I put that antenna you see on my BroncoII on the Pete, "Is that some kinda super TV antenna driver?" I was the talk of the truckstop.
    I'm retired from trucking now.

My call letters are my user name......kc0rey

If you were as smart as you say you are,

kc, I'm not a moderator like you, but do you think you could respond to posts without the personal jabs? It's a much more pleasant read without them.

That said, in regards to the feller who started this thread: You mentioned that you drive a Volvo. I also once drove a Volvo and had one heck of a time getting my SWR's down. After many "professional" CB shops telling me that it was my Wilson 2000 antenna and trying to sell me a $300 replacement (don't ask me what kind, cuz I've slept since then ),:laughing8: I finally happened upon a driver in a Volvo who told me to get a "perch mount". This mount will replace one of the torx head bolts on your mirror. Simply unscrew said bolt and replace with the antenna mount, then run your coax to the CB. So long as the whip is trimmed good, you should have a great SWR and be able to receive and transmit well with a barefoot radio without the need for a grounding strap as this type of mount will ground itself to the chassis of the truck. Hope this helps.

    Disclaimer:

Buck and a Half chose to put down my work here and my hobbies. I responded by ridiculing him in my answers.

That was improper and Buck and a Half I apologize to you.

kc- I moderate on another board (not trucking) and as I only skimmed what Buck and a Half had to say because I was more interested in what you were saying (as far as the instructional part of your post) I didn't catch his put downs. Sorry. I can see how you'd be a little put out.

We use those yuesu out here for hunting moose and deer in maine. I was well aware of their range,my oldest son has 2 of them and my uncle, they are really handy for hunting out here in the woods or 4 wheeling. Here is my friends business card number, he is a decorated vietnam retired lifer army 1st sgt.,his name is Fred. Like I said He works on Galaxy and ranger radios for some of the fleets here in maine. one of them is Bills auto haulers, this guy Bill has about 20 140000 peterbuilts all 550 cat and 18 speed 100plus mile trucks, over 300 led lights ,they are all red, he buys the best equipment and puts galaxy radios in all of them. Fred does all his work, also numerous owner operators and company trucks in maine. I took exception to your post that you sent to me first, saying I didn't know what I was talking about and I didn't know anything. I can't fix them myself but I do know who can. freds business nyumber is ****Ya can't Post Phone numbers*****,he knows me as todds dad,who is my son that has brought himradios to fix and tune from alot of other drivers where he works at Pep trans, they run about 30 trucks. You can eat off his floor in his kw,its all armour alled and wheels are all hand polished by him. I have 2 boys that drive and they are prime examples of truckers of old and new. They shift a truck like I do. If I took you for a ride you would think i had an automatic. I'm not really bragging but i learned from the best out there and passed it on to them.My oldest son been driving 16 yrs now and youngest son for 8 yrs. I am a third generation trucker myself. dad, three brothers ,my two out of three sons. Like I said years ago played with ground planes like you made on your bronco,we did all that 25 30 years ago. I have a cobra console in the barn with upper lower in between half channels base.and the golden eagle mlollipop mike, and an old 40 channel base uniden also. I didn't mean to poke fun at you but when you started your don't know anything line ,i had to let you know that I'm not as stupid as you thought. I have owned 3 of my own trucks, and drove numerous brand new petes, macks, brockways, kws. I also made more money back in 84 and 86 hauling paper from boston to maine and then staton island, I grossed 180,000. in them years a nd cleared netted 90,000 in them days. Then Jb hunt came along and stole all the paper for 86cpm,we were getting 98cpm,fuel was 57cpg back them. M aybe I'll get by to see you sometime, maybe your ok,But one thing about me,I go by buck and a half out here everyday and i've never hidden or backed down from anything yet in my life. I will never bull you about anything unless I did it. I have been told that with the volvos or any fiberglass cabs and doors, that the rv groundless antennas work good, That was quite awhile ago when trucks went to fiberglass. i know that I heard this from ca. cb. years ago. Hey I'm not mad at you but I will come by to see you. i get out thru ny,oh,il,in,wi,every week. I run 90 ,88,86,17,90,94,etc. I think I have delivered to your town ,Got to look it up on my map,I mark everyplace i go,for future use. Hey man, have a great day and weekend. Hope to see you soon. if you can get up here in maine I'll intro you to fred and his shop. He's a hamm too. good luck, why did you retire already?,just wondering. see ya. Always proud of trucking and the rest of us out here.
