It's comme ce, comme ca ... Paper you spend the end of each day adding up and verifying your hours for the day and updating the recap. Now the computer takes care of all the math.

In return, wiht EOBR, you need to go back and verify all the status changes, edit to ensure they correctly reflect your activity and time, verify the notes match the activity and do the DVIR.

Don't need to verify anything if you keep it accurate throughout the day.

Been out here five years and this is the first I've heard this. How about a link to that law?

Yeah it is... they generally don't go after the guy who pushes the envelope a bit. I recall my safety director mentioning this sort of federal penalty for submission of false logs. There was a driver involved in a truck-school bus crash in WI, 2005 - multiple kid deaths. He was charged with falsification of the record of duty status and was facing 60 years in prison for multiple counts. 395.8e mentions prosecution for this, but doesn't go into detail - so its in the federal code, but outside of the FMCSRs.

Ya know... push the stupid buttons for about 15 seconds, show some sleeper berth time, and don't even let this sort of thing bother ya. Really, is this that inconvenient?

That's the one. They went after the guy on the logbook violations because it was a lot more serious prison time than they could get for somethiing like negligent manslaughter.

The real point is that you never know when you're going to have to use your logbook to support something concerning your actions on the road. If you NEVER put any line 2 time in, how can you prove in a court of law that you were actually EVER sleeping? If you need to show that you weren't "fatigued" and you have no line 2 time, a clever attorney can clean you out in a civil case.

Here's another idea to avoid civil litigation and felony counts:

    Don't kill anybody.

easily said until mommy rolls the suv across the median in front of you.

aside from "staying legal", line 2 can help with split sleeper on that not so rare occasion.
