Thanks SteerTire. The closer I get to $35K, the better I will feel. I am so close to the bone making that. Any disasters are just that. And yes, I have had a good laugh with all the claims made by companies. All I know is that even if they are all full of it, I have been teaching for a while, and school systems don't even try that because they all know it is common knowledge that they have no respect, pay too little, expect too much, and so on.

Find a good small company where you live. I made more working for them and enjoyed life a lot more that way then working for the big guys

Thanks Nothereoften. I will keep your suggestion in mind. Did you have any particular type of nearby, small company job that you liked best. If so, what type and why?

Let me break it down for you, over simplified you might say.

Rate per mile x 100k = first year Gross pay.

First year drivers are hard pressed to get over 100k mile per year. But, there are those that do more. Many drivers average 10k miles a month.

The starting pay is what you’re looking for. Then how often you will be getting raises. Bonuses will be offered. But difficult to achieve at most companies.

When I first came on board with a company (no names ;) ) in 2010. They were only trying to achieve 1800 miles per week, per truck. The economy was that weak. And pay was frozen.

These are things you have to keep in mind, and things that can happen. Trucking is a steady job, but it is by no means steady pay.

Many people that have been here awhile, can certainly remember the comical pictures of drivers SITTING in truck stops with mail boxes strapped to their fenders. It’s not all roses. It can go south easily.

All that said, trucking has been very good to me. I came in 30 years ago +\- out of desperation. And I’ve never looked back.

Thanks SteerTire. Your comments weaken my knees but it isn't like I have options. At least knowing what you are sharing will prevent me from wetting my pants, when my focus will need to be on driving safely. I do understand that things can go bad, and expect that they will at some point, but if that happens, I am sure I will have company. Thank you again.

You will do just fine :)
You’re doing it the right way. Asking questions, understanding you won’t get rich. Just wanting to survive. And that’s actually a good attitude to have.

Get that first 6 months behind you. Then you should be able to breath again. The struggle is what makes us smarter. Some say stronger, but smarts are what determines who makes it.

Although, we still have a lot of dumba## out here. ;)

Small flatbed company, family run. They didn't leave my head in the sand, pretty much everyone was open about what was going on. I never had to question if their was return freight. (Sat twice waiting on loads in 12 years with 2 companies) if I had a question or appointment I called the customer, not waiting for 18 people to filter an answer.
