I've heard that from a good source too. I don't consider myself an old timer.
Now my late father in law, he was an old timer. He started driving in the 40s and would tell me about Monteagle being gravel.
I can't even imagine. Now they were men.

us95 between lewiston and i-84 is pretty grueling but nowhere near nuts as us411 and the tale of the dragon. being nearly maxed out at 80k, i can go from either i-84 to lewiston or lewiston to the interstate within a matter of 4 1/2hrs. it's pretty easy nowadays. white bird is a pretty neat grade to pull or go down. however, in my opinion, it has nothing on wolf creek pass along us160 in south-central colorado.

My coast to coast days are over, but that is one of the few I never made it to. Always wanted to, it just never worked out.

the first time i went down wolf creek pass, it had been iced over. white bird is mostly a straight, long downhill 7% grade. wolf creek has hairpins, s-curves, and it's all 12 miles of 7-7%. my butt puckered in ways it had never puckered before. i also had 46k pounds of booze inside the trailer.

Wolf Creek is a piece of cake, my first trip over it was at 3 am, near white out conditions from 3 miles east of the summit to 6 miles west of the summit, chained up from South Fork to Pagosa with 36K of bleachers, chairs and desks for a new school in Farmington, NM. You just have to pay attention to those speed limit signs for your weight of vehicle.

Now if you want real fun, US 550, Durango to Ouray. Coal Bank, Molass, Red Mtn. passes. For the record, the road is a truck route, just not recomended, especially Coal Bank for anything over a 45 ft trailer. I've run it with a specialized 45' trailer and 53' trailers and had nice scratches in the finish from rubbing the mtn. side or the guardrail. In the winter time, these are the three most frequently closed mtn. roads in Colorado. I know food delivery guys who've been stranded for upto 3 days in Silverton because both passes were closed and the conditions were too miserable for CDOT to send plows. The guardrails on Coal Bank are all ruined from trucks rubbing on them and cars/RV's hitting them.

donner pass really sucks with the super narrow road work in both directions between the westbound weigh station and the nevada state line.

Yeah the construction through there is a little tight, especially when you got a hot-rod trucker passing ya on one of the curves through there.

Donner pass west bound was just about finished when I was up there in August.

Hwy 20 is a fun one (not really bad) although I had UPS behind me pulling doubles passing me over double yellow going downhill into a hairpin turn at night

I like the challenging roads and hwys where is the fun in going in a straight line.
The crazier the roads the better for me. I like using my skills and keeping them sharp.

Also Iowa Hill road that goes to Iowa Hill CA ( east of auburn) is really a beautiful rd its narrow, steep and windy I don't think you could do with a T/T
