I used to live in Young Harris,GA up there just south of the NC state line and HWY 129 The Dragons Tail is fun. Drove it and all of the other roads in a truck and bike all the time. I had to laugh at the one video labeled Swift! That guy did EVERYTHING wrong when it comes to driving on curved roads! I've never seen anyone cross the center a much as he did!

If you ever do get the chance to drive the tail then stop at the little store at the south end and buy the T Shirt! This one is 20 yeas old!

I would say the most dangerous route is I81 all the way from PA to I40 may not have alot of curves but the there are plenty of drivers on it that make it very hard to drive thru it. Has anyone ever counted on a per week basis the amout of big truck accidents? Last night there was one that shut down the hwy at about 1am and in front of my eyes a driver that must have been tired wasnt paying attention to the stopped traffic. While he jacknifed to miss the stopped cars trailer litterly went up on the outside tires and lifted the drivers side off the ground at least 2 foot. This area is becoming worse and worse each day. My company routes me this way and from the 78/81 exchange thru i40 its no joke. I run into at least one big truck accident each way.So in my opinion its pretty dangerous...

I was on hwy 58 in CA. Saw the sign for the "Tehachapi Loop". This was something I had read about in "TRAINS" magazine - the rail line makes a complete 360 - degree loop! Took the turnoff - Woodford-Tehachipi Road I think- didn't see any signs restricting trucks. One guy on the side of the road kind of looked at me funny, though. This road turned out to be full of tight and hairpin turns, on grades of course. I ended up blowing my air horn at each blind curve, just looking for a way out or for a turnaround. After many miles, I found the "Loop", but I was more worried about just getting out of there. Finally found my way back to Hwy. 58. Never again in a big truck!

I was curious to see what that looked like, looked it up on google earth. Cool.

By the way, that's what you get for trying to go sight-seeing in a big truck!

Only because of the volume of traffic it gets, and 600 mile stretch of road you are talking about. There's nothing spectacular about any of it.

I would have said I80 in WY at night a few years back when I started this crazy business. Very heavy big-rig traffic, and way too many aggresive truck drivers. Nothing spectacular, unless you're new to it.

Anything marked as "scenic" in the Rand McNally bible usually qualifies as something that could potentially scare the fruity pebbles outta ya!

Arkansas Rte 7 from Russelville to US65 going up to Branson qualified for me one very stormy night... narrow, twisting, not lit, heavy grades, vertical cliffs at the fog line on the inside of a tight turn, hydroplaning 4-wheelers coming right at me. For awhile I was IN the storm, 30-foot visibility inside the clouds with cloud-to-cloud lightning going off right outside my cab - I could have reached out and grabbed a bolt if I'd wanted to. It spawned about 10 tornados in AR, OK and MO that evening. Got up to Springfield eventually... and was pleasantly surprised to have survived it. Added that road to my list of "not ever gonna do that one agin" roads.

I've ridden the Dragon a couple of times with a 40' dump wagon. It's really not all that bad in the wintertime during the week, there's not much traffic and you can see through the trees. I made the best money I've made trucking running 411 from Bush Beans in Chestnut hill back up to Newport 6 times a night with a food grade tank. Nothing to do but just take it slow (loaded anyway).

Probably the worst I've done on a major highway was 4 of us pulling 70' stretch trailers with bridge beams from Bristol, TN to West Jefferson, NC on US321. 321 was bad enough, but we had to back up to the crane at the job site, which meant backing up almost 2 miles through a couple of curves that had us in both ditches. Good times.
