It has become pretty common to snatch the cummins out of the newer trucks here and install a cat. There are also places that sell every part you need, to install right down to pulleys and mounts to use your existing accessories, no leg work or parts sourcing required.

Engine swap around here usually runs in the 5 to 6 thousand dollar range in labor at a independent shop, parts are additional.

Must be a used engine, around here 35 grand gets you an inframe on your existing engine.
I have a friend that ordered a brand new engine from cat, and had KW install it every component new from flywheel to fan clutch new, total bill was 44 thousand and change. This was 5 years ago though.
This was not a sex change though.
I have another friend that ordered a reman engine and all associated parts from some place in Oregon, and his cost was similar, and he did the labor himself.
This was going from cummins to cat, but it was a painless install with all the right parts.
I have a neighbor that bought a supposedly rebuilt cat and had a local shop swap out his cummins, it didn't take but a week and cost was not bad, but the engine was, sadly that was his last straw, the truck is now up for sale.Last edited: Jun 9, 2019
