When looking at this you need to get more information from mechanics than just what you may hear on this forum or other forums. EGR issues are legendary with post-03 engines. Relaibility was a joke. Fuel mileage and maintance where issues.
But as time went on manufactures learned more, prices came down on parts, mechanics learned and now my '06 rivials pre-03 MPG. When looking at trucks I found plenty of '04's and '05's pushing 1 million miles that had not been rebuilt.
The issues with '03 and '04 motors are legnedary. But what you will see is that the only knock on these motors now is the EGR when talking maintance expense. But look at the price of an '05 Century with 500,000 miles compared to an older Pete with 400,000 miles on a rebuilt. You can almost put two new motors in for the price difference.
Before you go and take an older truck because of issue from 5-6 years ago take a look at the statistics and talk to mechanics. Yeah, they are going to like the older engine because it is easier to work on. But as far as what is happening TODAY, you can get the same reliability for far less money.
Flame away fellas.

but when you start getting egr and turbo problems with the newer engines--that can add up pretty quick
sometimes it seems that if you have a good engine a person should almost keep the engine and sell the truck when it is old
but everything new soon becomes old-- and for some reason older always seems better--except for me--the older i get --the more repairs i need -
I had an '06 Century that I put 400k on and ave loaded MPG (always 77-80K) was 6.2-6.5. And to be fair I did over half my trips from LA to Portland at 55 mph and the rest from LA to SLC. So most of my miles at 55 mph.
Currently have an 06 Volvo. Got it last December and have averaged better than 6 with more than 70% of miles in weather. When I am not fighting wind and other elements I am happy with MPG. Fully loaded has been in mid-6's and see 7+ when below 25K in the box.
When talking with drivers that are getting better than 7 with pre-03 I notice that they have a lot of "extras" added. Wish I could do more to mine but thems is the breaks. -
thanks for the info bigbadbill. Its just hard when you get the job and get approved finacing and start looking at trucks and check all you can on the truck and turn around and look at the motor and think are you going to blow or not haha
-
a lot depends on the driver and terrain---it would be interesting to know what the pay off period for all those extras would be---i think 6.25 would be a nice low spot--
-
thats my worry---looking at trucks now---kinda figure if i can go 2 yrs after purchase with a rebuild---i would be happy---but to pop an engine right away---
-
canuck that is funny cause thats what i told my wife.... if it makes it for 2 yrs is i kept saying over and over

Don't I know it. I went from looking at trucks in the mid-30's and ended up in the high 40's to get engine with less than 450k on it. Not a cheap hobby
