That's because your instructor doesn't know how to instruct.

He knows how to drive, but he doesn't know how to teach others how to drive.

There's actually a recent thread posted in relation to this topic. It's an excellent example of how not to treat someone who needs help.

So the first opportunity, on the first downgrade, kick the truck into neutral or push the clutch to the floor and see if the instructor starts to instruct...

I was "the guy" at my trucking school that took drivers and weeded out the drivers from the instructors.. there are million mile drivers that are fantastic as drivers, but cannot instruct at all and there are people with little experience that a fantastic at it. Some of it is empathy mixed with knowledge. Knowledge goes a long way. It is pretty apparent pretty quickly who can lead by example and teach what needs to be taught or not. I think drivers who decide that they never want another driver to go through some things that they went through make the best instructors. A sense of humor also helps. Being able to snap adults out of their habits is a must. 90% of trucking instruction is breaking the bad habits that they have acquired after X amount of years driving their personal vehicles. Now they have to relearn to follow all those rules that they stopped following the second they were handed their drivers license when they were 16 years old... And they have to do it in a 70 foot long articulating vehicle with an odd transmission and weird brakes.

So after your training at the OC will you be going out with a different trainer on the road?

    FlaSwampRat and farmerjohn64 Thank this.

    Don't give up.

The ability to impart knowledge to others is a skill either someone has or they don't.

There isn't even a test academia employs to determine whether or not a teacher or professor possesses this skill, so you can be darn sure the trucking industry won't have one either.

Trial and error may end up becoming your best teacher.
