Yes, I have no doubt the companies do not want to hire out of Central and South Florida. I am in the enviable position of not owning a home, being single, so I can move any direction I like. Soon I will not be calling Florida home, I am sure, there are far too many trucking opportunities in other places.

I know US Express Enterprises has a terminal in Orlando FL as does JB Hunt. If you have experience, Kenan has tanker operations as does FRT. Raven is based out of Jacksonville. Crete and Schaffer have terminals in Deland. CR England does hire here too.
McClane food service has openings as well as Roma and Papa Johns International. I live in Melbourne and have done my research.

If youve got some experience and a good dmv check out Quality Carriers. They are the country's largest tanker company and are out of Tampa.

That being said, I do not know what a tanker is. Fuel tanker? -

sorry got in a hurry and hit wrong key. Quality requires hazmat. One side is chemicals and the othe is food grade. While they might be something to aspire to you need lots of experience before you can even be considered for a company driver and even more for o/o. but good luck to ya -
I live in New Port Richey, Fl. Its about 30 miles north of tampa. Housing is cheap here since the market fell out. I work for FFE Transportation and have had no problems getting out of Florida due to an account in Bradenton with Tropicanna and also Del Monte out of the Port of Tampa. Getting loads into Florida, them for me seem to be rare for some reason lol.

Swift is in Ocala
I'm looking at starting with them in March and my wife is talking about wanting to move to Orlando area, as housing is affordable and the job wage is good.
She also says that since it is more inland, the risk from hurricanes is smaller than say Ft. Walton Beach. I have my doubts but....
It's good to hear that places like Crete are in Florida too. It would be great to drive for them after getting experiance and job stability from Swift. Of course the decision will come after more research at that time. -
On a side note, Tampa Bay is 2 hours from the Ocala terminal.
After you have some experiance or if you go to a school and get your cdl, then crete is 2 hours 28 minutes from Tampa Bay (located in DeLand).
If you have a solid work history, or have close to a solid work history for the past 3 years, I would suggest getting your cdl from a PTDI certified school and applying for crete. You can get a pre-hire offer from Crete before going to school and know you have a job when you get done, if that route is an option for you.
