What do you mean they don't pay over time, at the worst case Federal Law requires overtime after 40hrs.

Drivers, driver's helpers, loaders and mechanics are exempt from the overtime pay provisions of the FLSA if employed by a motor carrier, and if the employee's duties affect the safety of operation of the vehicles in transportation of passengers or property in interstate or foreign commerce.

My wife's company pays over time, but you have to be there three years to get it. Some LTL outfits pay OT from day one, some don't because they don't have to if they don't want to because of our wonderful legislators.

I don't drive at night, well, I may drive late or get up early, but never between 10 and 2. I can't stay awake. I know this and schedule myself accordingly. My night vision is not what it used to be easier. I am not a night person. EVER. About twice a year I go round and round with my job about this, but in the end I do what I have to. I am the captain of the ship.

My problem is that I can't sleep during the day, so no night shift. I guess I should get off the road too. I told my carrier point blank a few years ago, that I am an accident waiting to happen if I was forced to work during the midnight hour. I actually got in trouble for that comment, and in the end I still don't drive through the night.

That's because you live in the worker's paradise of California.

I can't and won't do night shifts either. Neither the 1-4 AM start time BS. Can't do it. My body and mind just doesn't function when I get up that early. 6 AM is as early I can comfortably get up. That's why I could never do grocery delivery like Sysco or most P and D LTL work.

I have to do that frequently, down dead-end streets where I know there's no cul-de-sac. Gotta love internet shoppers.

You'd be right. Daytime linehaul runs are the most coveted in the entire trucking industry.

I ran nights for 2 years. I NEVER got used to it. It's not for everybody.

P&D is great, I have never had a day less than 10-12 hours. Some of the companies pay overtime after 55 hours. Health ins for a single person usually is less than $20.00 per week. You will realize quickly that they don't usually have the best equipment like the big otr companies but That's life. If you actually work your first year you will make close to that $60k mark, (start usually at $20.50 and in 3 years typically your at $25.00 per hr).again if you work they will see this and you will be the guy that gets the extra hours. Also, they guys that have been there a while are mostly good guys that piss and moan a lot, so just ignore that because after a year or two so will you. So long story short you will be treated like a human unlike the otr companies, you are paid by the hour not cpm, unless line haul and don't do that unless you like 1 day off its mon through fri night so you get home sat am usually sleep, get up go to bed later, up all day sun.up until 10 or 11 mon morning back to bed it sucks, but still better than otr. I would stay away from YRC, never know if they are going to be in business or not they are currently 1.5billion in debt, pay cuts and part of their pension cut and its union and you don't make more than $20.00 per hr and they are scheduled to lose another 7% to supposedly stay in business, and it sounds like the union isn't going to allow this. I work for Estes I love it. also try old dominion,(20.50 hrto start), R+L, you start out at $17.50, and takes 5 years to get to top pay, don't know anything about SAIA or FedEx Freight. So long story short Apply and know you will never go back OTR.

    Robin Williams Thanks this.
