I stay away from crossings when trains are moving, if they come unglued the wreckage can far exceed those white lines. I let Mr/Ms Impatient take the front spot or two.

I worked on the Sunrail project; it has a lot of blind turns and crossings, and engineer's nightmare. Not only the commuter trains, but Amtrak runs on there as well.

Another lane question; I took a company road test the other day, and the little bumps were offset by about a foot from the white lines. I stayed between the lines and got a comment from the company guy about hitting the bumps.

So which one constitutes the actual lane boundaries, the bumps or the lines? I always saw the bumps as an accessory to the lines, since the lines came way first.

Lane bumps and rumble strips are simply there to aggravate drivers. Its equal to getting slapped by a woman for, " getting out of line".

Its the law for all hazmat vehicles and buses buddy, just like speeding if you ignore the law sooner or later you'll get caught, and it'd be a common courtesy to make sure your in the right hand lane when you pull up so traffic is not impeded.

...and getting busted NOT stopping for a RRX when you are supposed to is an automatic DQ for the 1st conviction.

I think you may have misunderstood the question, perhaps?

No one was asking about whether to stop or not, I think we're all pretty clear that it is the law.

The one and only question was if the regs require a specific lane or not. And I err on the side of courtesy, unless safety trumps it.

What is an automatic DQ? Is that when I go to the Dairy Queen and they already have my Butterfinger Blizzard sitting on the counter for me?

I think here you are only allowed to stop in the right lane unless you have a breakdown.

There was an issue a while back (30 years or more) that caused the state to create that law for both buses and hazmat.

Unlike a "serious" violation like speeding 15+ where you get a mulligan on the 1st conviction and don't get sidelined for 60 days until the 2nd in 3 years, violating that railroad grade will buy you "no less than 60 days" disqualification for the 1st offense. All you need to do is get caught 1 time and you're parked for a couple months (or more..."at least" is pretty open ended, just won't be less than). That's what I meant by "automatic DQ". 1 conviction and you're done.

NavigatorWife and Studebaker Hawk Thank this.

...and make that with chocolate ice cream, too. Or the Georgia Mud Fudge...that one was pretty good.
