    • Try and do whatever you have to do to have a credit card or "line of credit" cash advance card for emergencies. If crap hits the fan, don't rely on your employer to be a source for necessary funds to rent a car or fly home or get a hotel for a few nights, or whatever the need is. Leverage any cash advances the employer provides, especially if they're free, but have your own alternate source of cash or credit of preferably at a minimum, $500, from day 1. You never know what might happen or when it may happen.
    • Get all your bills in order to eliminate mailed statements or bills. Get everything set up for online payments
    • Have some form of cellular hotspot plan in place and a tablet or notebook to pay bills and stay connected. For truck stop wifi. I find PFJ's premium service the best overall for speed and reliability, at 90% of their locations, in most of the parking lot areas. 1 year unlimited for $100 can't be beat and it's HD streaming quality at most locations, at most times of the day. And this is not PFJ saying this, this is one who's been on it for several years and use it daily. But otherwise, seek out the best cellular data plan that works for you and your finances, with your carrier for when you're away from wifi hotspots.
    • If you have Dish or DirecTv or other cable service at home, look into options for wandering wifi access and perhaps reduced costs with bundling of cellular and/or video streaming access online
    • If you have renters insurance for belongings at apartment or storage or homeowners insurance, this is good as this provides some help to cover personal belongings in the truck, in the event of a catastrophic truck fire. These happen more often then you probably think. You'll almost assuredly going to have more in personal belongings lost than the deductible amount, especially if you have laptops, smartphones, lots of clothes, etc.
    • If you have loved ones at home or elsewhere, get the most amount of life insurance you can afford, either on your own and/or through your employer and keep it updated and current. This is a dangerous occupation. Just sayin'. Buy the double indemnity if available, it's cheap. If you're husband/wife teaming, be sure to name an alternate beneficiary in the event you're both killed in an accident . Not trying to be a downer here. This is something you need to be thinking about NOW, not later, because you never know out here. But be advised, stating "truck driver" as occupation on applications will cause slightly higher life and health insurance premiums if you buy these privately on your own ... through the employer, this occupation is already factored into their bulk rate.
