I once got stopped towing a 5 foot long utility trailer behind my station wagon full of kids... and told I had to drive the "truck" speed limit, by a state trooper. That a trailer of any kind made me a "truck" in the definition of the law. It was, of course, totally BS.

But he didn't give me a ticket, even though I was 4 over the "car" speed limit of 65 or 70 (don't remember what it was at the time), meaning I was 14 or 19 over the "truck" limit.

Anybody have any figures on this? What are states like NY paying for DOT enforcement officers, and what are their revenues from fines? My guess is that the fines don't even begin to cover the expenses.

Ok folks, i personally have received alot of emails asking me about my nick name Driver of the year in this forum. So i'll answer it so that everybody knows aboutit! Ok, when i started driving semi's in 2006 for a company here in Florida, not going to name the Company, we had a Manager that had the driver of the year award. Some of you think it's, complying with DOT regulations, being on time, being cautious etc... well guys, sorry for disappointing you! the award of driver of the year was given to the driver that in one year brought the most revenue, did not matter what you did to accomplish that, tear paper logs, drink as much coffee you needed etc.... he hired an ex FL DOT officer and he trained us how to rig the logs, what the DOT's will look for, how to make sure your brakes and equiptment was in top condition and even today, i spend alot of money on my rig, so that year pumping cement on a pneumatic tanker through florida made the most money, never was cought, when we had the construction housing boom in florida, we had hundreds of loads and a shortage of drivers and i would drive from 4:30 am to 8:00pm sleep in between that first shift and then the manager would change tractors and i would get one in a different color, model and a fake wig and mustache when we pass the scales(had to go through scales in fort myers) in case the same DOT officer could recognized me from early in the day! So there you guys got it! The founding fathers in this Country gave us the right of pursuit of happines and i will not let a politician or bureaucrat tell me through regulations how much money i can make when politicians make millions stealing our money! I pay heavy IRS highway tax, $1,500 a year in registration in this state! so i have to make my money back! In matter of fact, we have a driver that does Containers with his log book, he told me he has to park his truck next month because he will need tires, plates, repaires looming and he's not making enough money! Im not going to tell him what to do? he knows the game and if you run like the Feds want you to run? you'll go broke like the driver that goes by his log and that's why these regulations where designed for? to limit your income potential! I run the speed limit, doesn't matter what happend hours ago, my log will say the right thing, so since being Driver of the year in 2006, it's still my first priority! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ then Safety! I dont recommend another driver to run their business like i do! So it's about the money and being with family on the weekends. Hopefully i din't break anybodys heart for not being the Driver of the year they thought!

When they write a $200 ticket for your washers not having any fluid in it and give you 8 points for it.. It isn't about safety anymore.. I understand brakes.. Wheel seals, oil leaks at a point.. You know safety things but when a man does his pre trip and a headlight goes out between point a and b officer stops you and says.. Hey buddy you have a headlight out you reach in the side box and fix it an he writes a you a ticket where the f is the safety in that.. It is REVENUE.. He is filling his quota numbers whatever you wanna call it and yes they have them.. Had a family member lose his job because he didnt write enough tickets..

You know governments from the beginning of time have had laws that regulate what you can and cannot do. No government just leaves citizens alone. This is not a political statement it is a simple, descriptive, historical fact. A certain segment of the American population has this fantastic notion of personal liberty that is truly absurd and unworkable. As soon as I am engaged in public actions that could have a negative impact on others government has the right and was actually created to insure that I am not harming other people. I still feel that I live in the land of the free. Government does not interfere with my beliefs, where I live, what I say, what I think, and with most of what I do. It does interfere with my life when I go to get a truck driving job. It says I need a CDL, a drug test, and a medical card. And when I am driving down the road it says I need to obey speed limits, and operate within certain parameters of time, and it holds me responsible for using safe equipment. It is neanderthal to think we can all live in some perfect state of total freedom without a government to regulate public activities that could have an effect on other citizens. Call we weird, but I don't see the government as an alien entity out to get me, but as something we have created to serve the public good. I agree that sometimes it does that badly or stupidly, but they are not violating the Constitution or my personal freedoms when they regulate trucking. If a DOT officer does something stupid, mean, or illegal report him or her and sue 'em. Personally, I have never met a DOT officer who was uncivil to me, or did anything more than carry out their duty.
