Today is my 38th year driving. It has been a rough road. Ill be honest with all of you. I dont want to do this anymore. I ran local for 38 years and It has been a challenge. My driving record is pretty good. 1 ticket in 74, for driving in the 3rd lane, got thrown out. Then in 85, got one for going over the double yellow lines, went to court, got thrown out. Thats it, No accidents or speeding tickets. I think I did O.K for the years out there. But Im a ready to hang it up. I will try for another 2 years the most, because my wife will be 66 years young, and the S.S pay is about $2200.00 a month. We are very well off financially, and wont have to worry about making it. We invested good, and between both of us, retiring from Pharmaceutical companies, We`ll be alright. Trucking has changed so much, It gets too me, I have a hard dealing with the way the industry is today. If I cant do the 2 years, oh well, Done.

    Wargames congratulations!

You are so right about changes. Sometimes it's hard to see something you love turn to something else. I started driving a car when you entered trucking. My entry to trucking was six years later.

Congratulations on being a professional driver. Your posts, knowledge and the way you conduct yourself on TTR reflect that status.

Congratulations on the 38 years. I myself am hoping to get another 2-3 in pulling oversize then find something a little less stressful, but the ltl is looking better and better all the time.

    Congrats!
Know the feeling. Driving a local run now 4 days a week till that magic retirement day arrives.
The industry sure has changed, some for the better, most worse.
Hope the last 2 yrs will go fast for you.

    SheepDog and Wargames Thank this.

Running Local, LTL, was extremely hard, You have to sell yourself as being the best, some of the companies will pay you by your performance. That was a tough one. I ran against some darn good drivers. I know, that where ever some of the drivers I competed against, Have great jobs and are ready to retire, if they didn't already. My life in Trucking, the last few years has changed my life drastically, I found myself in the Hospital, Stroke, I cant jump off the docks any more, I walk a lot slower, and Not easy to get in and out of the truck anymore. I know when I finally make the decision to quit, it is going to be very hard on me. All these years driving, and then to just sit at home. I know Ill find stuff to do, but Trucking has been my life.

If you think retiring is going to be hard, you might look at something part-time to kind of ease yourself into it. One of my grandfathers drove school bus for several years after he retired from farming. My father retired, then did some consulting to keep himself busy.
