Got up early today and left the house at around 530 and went down to my favorite Dunkin’ Donuts and saw my good friend. I arrived at Fort Pierce at around 7am and went to the Wawa and got myself some water and orange juice.
upon arrival met up with my instructor. I’m not going to say any names. I had two different instructors today. first drive session was focusing on learning how to shift and doing the straight line back.
Second, and was learning how to do offset and getting used to the automatic truck. I have a CDL with no restrictions. However, the instructors found it easier when I used an automatic. Also, I started on my 90° alley dock. I had a lot of fun and went to Publix and stocked up. -
You already have a CDL?
So, which company are you training with? -
I already have a CDL but the vast majority of the companies want me to go through the whole 160 hour training program. I am leaning heavily towards Swift.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
I have not touched a semi since 2010. Just like riding a bike again gotta get used to the pedals and ease yourself into it.
Chinatown Thanks this. -

I’m going to go visit Swift’s facility in Ocalla once I get done with trucking school. I’m still considering Indian River at this point.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
I'd put Indian River as a first choice.
Swift refrigerated is ok though.Vic Firth, ducnut and CalculatedRisk Thank this. -

I’d do IRT way before Swift. I think, you’re overlooking a lot of better opportunities, with the thought of just getting a job. It’s a LONG way to Ocala for Swift. I’d be looking at opportunities in Lakeland, which is where a huge number of Florida distribution centers are located. Heyl are in Zephyrhills. Plus, you have a huge number of LTL linehauls running I-95. Surely, one of those companies has a terminal location along there. I know there are opportunities in JAX, including DOT Foods. I just wouldn’t settle for the lowest common denominator in carriers.
You need to consider equipment, if going OTR. Most all tractors are pretty nice. But, there’s a massive difference in ride quality, comparing a spring-ride trailer to an air-ride trailer. IRT are on air-ride, BTW.Vic Firth, Gearjammin' Penguin and CalculatedRisk Thank this.
