I would try not plugging it in unless cooling is needed, it should keep things cold enough running half the time or less in the winter. Mine would cool to 40 below ambient, that's 25 degrees at 65 ambient, yes, stuff freezes in the good ones in cooler temps. I never had sour milk even in a week when I ran OTR, and I didn't run it all night when I was sleeping without the engine running in the spring and fall.

only problem i've had with MY coleman's is the fan goes out too quick!!
2 in 18 months, i have just quit trying to keep food in the truck!! -
I have a coleman 12 volt cooler, fits nicely in the closet of a kw 900L or a pete 379, always left the fan facing out never had a problem freezing or not getting cold enough,, have to blow lint and dust out of the fan once in a while tho.

I still have my Coleman from Wal-Mart and works perfectly after quite a few years. It kept stuff cold and didn't freeze. I HAVE had it freeze before though IF the ambient temperature was too low. Make sure you keep the heat on in your bunk (in the winter, of course). AND, if possible, keep the fan pointing INSIDE the cab! If it is real cold out and the fan is pointing toward the wall it will really get cold and freeze your stuff. Also, try this handy tool out to monitor it: 12 Volt Freezer Alarm. I work for the company that sells that and I just got that up not long ago due to that problem. It will let you keep and eye on it BEFORE your soda's burst in the middle of the night, LOL.

guess i was lucky my sodas didnt explode. i ended up leaving a sprite out in the cup holder the next day, and had myself a slushie after a couple hours. it was pretty good that way.

Tucker...
You mentioned in a post that your plug for your cooler keeps melting. I have a cure. Problem is It is wiggling in the socket and that makes it get too hot. I use to have the same prob. A cure is to use an extension cigarette lighter plug cable, cut one end off, wire it dierectly to the cigarette plug wires (Involves cutting and splicing). Then put the cooler plug into the extensions end and electrical tape it. Make sure it is tight together before taping it. Do not use duct tape, it melts the glue too easily. Too sticky. This way you can unplug the cooler if need be and just re-tape it when you get back in the truck. Need help let me know..
I have a cooler, coleman that i cought at wally world, doesn't get cold worth beans! The fan keeps going also. I buy replacement fans (which are the same as inside a computer tower) at a local electronics store and replace them every month or so to keep it working. I am seriously contemplating a Koolatron!tucker Thanks this. -

Do you guys buy the coolers to avoid the inverter/fridge thing? I had an inverter installed and am now shopping a mini-fridge, but I have to say the Pete 387 interior, though large enough, isn't all that well appointed. I'd want to put it in a cubby and not just floating around on the floor. The cubby is only 19.5 inches wide, and the lip of the entrance is concave, meaning I'm not going to be able to push anything wider than 16.5" through the opening.
It's not working out too well. With the right shape, I could put a 3+ cubic foot fridge in there, but even the 1.7's are almost 18" wide.
Any suggestions?
