First my ex girlfriend married a fishing guide in south florida. If you have a wife named Donna you can .......

If not, I would list the name of your boat as the company you worked for. It is easier then proving you were self employed. Of course if you named the boat, The Donna or My Donna or anything close to that you can ........

If you can drive a truck passing the CDL test all over again should be no problem There are schools out there that get you passed for $300 using a pickup truck and a flatbed with air brakes. If you don't need anything but to rent his rig, you can do it for $50 or so.

I went out to the drivers range and ran through the test myself and I cannot believe how easy it is now.

Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's and the like have trucks. You deliever locally and are easy to learn on. Smaller truck companies hire on CRAIGSLIST. I know that is against the common good to say but I have found some good leads there.

Don't give up, that is just when you get the good bits. Unless you did take my Donna and then ........

Not me bud, Not married and don't plan on being married. I have a legit business I pay taxes, Have a very big insurance policy, I am licensed through the state and county. I should not have to lie about it. I bust my butt during tarpon season running 2 trips a day! I have never been arrested, taken any drugs and have not had a sip of alcohol in 13yrs! I am a companies wet dream, Just without experience! LOL.... I recently got a local job that I think is going to be good, everyone seems very nice and eager to help with anything. We will see how it goes, If not I guess I will just keep fishing!!

I am finishing up with CDL school in Fort Lauderdale, should have my Class A in the next 2 weeks. I did a 3 year run as a marketing/creative director for an international franchise company but never really enjoyed being chained to a desk or the politics that came with it. I resigned back in April and I have been just taking it easy since. I used to haul crates/motorcycles & run the new unit and service p&d's all over the state for a big dealership a few years back so I have about 80,000 miles in various truck/trailer combos as well as extensive customer service and logistics coordination experience. I always loved the driving. I also used to race motocross all over the country so making a 12 hour drive to a race & back home after never bothered me.

My question is @outforpoon (LOL), what companies did you find that would even turn an ear to a new CDL grad? I am steering more towards local because if I have to choose between low-wage starter jobs in a different field, I'd rather it be something I truly enjoy & can't wait to go out and do every day.

I was looking at FFE's website; they have a terminal in Miami & Winter Haven. They hire students/newbies also. Looks like they have straight trucks & tractor-trailers at those terminals.

Most companies don't like to hire new grads out of school because all they have successfully done is drive for a few hours a day around town, and made it past a couple blocks to get their license on test day. These companies are on the hook for hiring good drivers and a good attorney will eat their lunch if their is a major accident, and the driver was not properly trained. Most of the local jobs are back breaking work, and you are put on a time schedule to get so many stops done in a day and being in a hurry is something newbies shouldn't put their self in because the chance of accident is doubled. Also the time it takes to get down the dynamics of backing a trailer if you are not use to that. Takes a few weeks to months. Most of these guys cant even pass the starter companies road test. Let alone think they have a chance at getting a decent local gig. Sure the food service and grocery jobs are there, but at the cost of knee's, back, and elbows down the road. Wish you all luck with getting any work but just know an accident while local driving can even prevent you from getting a crappy otr job in the future. Stay safe and God bless.
