I think what he was trying to get at is that the majority of the OTR drivers are grossly underpaid. I will be the first to agree to that. You can factor every delay you want into their CPM and it will do nothing but drive those numbers constantly down.I wonder what the drivers numbers would look like if they figured in their pay vs the time they spend doing things for the company? How would that break down to an hourly wage?

Not to mention the costs associated living on the road. And there are many of them. Food, laundry and toiletries that eat into the drivers wages just to name a few.

I drive local (340 mi) pulling a tanker. Why is it that I make more than most OTR drivers and by a considerable amount. All his and working Monday thru Friday. I think it should be just the opposite given the sacrifices those drivers make on a daily, weekly or mothly basis. Something really not right in this industry!

You still have to pay for food, laundry, and toiletries whether you are a truck driver running OTR or have a 9-5 office job...costs of living whether on the road or not. You can CHOOSE to buy groceries, keep them in a refrigerator/cooler and prepare your own meals, or you can CHOOSE to eat fast food all of the time....no different at home or on the road. As for laundry, I had to go to a laundromat and feed quarters into the washers and dryers until I saved up enough coin to buy a washer and dryer for the house. For what it costs to buy a new washer and dryer, you can do 400-500 loads (or more) of laundry at the laundromat...only difference is the convenience of having it in the house. In regards to the toiletries, truck stops and motels typically provide soap and towels...so you're actually spending LESS on toiletries than if you were home having to buy everything you used.

Now as for some companies paying more than others, that's true in ANY field. There are companies who treat their employees right, and then there are companies who treat their employees like dirt. That isn't something exclusive to trucking. Whenever you are considering accepting a job, you have the ability to say "No thanks...that just isn't going to compensate me enough for my time and effort." As long as a company is capable of filling positions at a low wage, they are going to be able to pay a low wage...provided those low wage employees perform up to the standards expected by the company. If the company wants to attract better employees (or motivate the ones they already have), they can choose to pay more. Some do...most do not. Again, that is nothing exclusive to the trucking industry.

But yeah, when I started driving locally, I was still making the same (or better) that I had been while OTR.

Did more pipe today, learned how to secure Pipe Stakes and Dunnage. I've done 10+ loads of pipe so i think i have it down :biggrin_25526:

There was allot of stuff going on today so we didnt get to finish up, tomorrow will be the last day.

I have to be their at 7am, we are going to follow a driver to watch/help him secure his load (im assumeing a big oversize load) then back to the terminal to test out, them i think i'll be driving back to Gainsville to get a truck (if they have one) if not they'll pay for me to stay in the hotel up there again, but i figure by now they should have a truck lined up for me (i hope).

I also got to hook to 2 RGN's today, the first one was a 2 axle single drop with a flip over 3rd axle we had to attach the flip axle, then put it down, then i grabbed a 2 axle Double drop and backed it next to the other one, then they picked it up with the forklift and put it on the 3 axle, and another driver grabbed the 2 RGN's.

Also got to see a port today, one of the O/Os that runs local-ish was over their with a stretch trailer loading a HUGE 80' long thing it looked like a giant creat, but anyway he needed 2 8x8's to we ran them across Houston over to him.

We started EARLY this morning, got to the terminal at 645am. We bobtailed to a shipper to meet up with a O/O who was loading there to "supervise" as per the receivers contract with LST, and anyway i got to secure 1 side of it while the driver did the other side. we used EIGHT 1/2" chains, them sum beaches are HEAVY!:biggrin_2551: lol

Anyway then we went back to the terminal and i secured a flip axle on a RGN (secured it up on top of the trailer) that was quick n' easy.

Then I had to do my test, i was told my test could be anything, and they cant help me. They threw me the keys to a day cab and said go secure that stack of trailers and i'll be over to check it out in a few minutes....

    I passed!:biggrin_25525:

I also used 10 chains when i only needed 5 :biggrin_25523: oh well, I didnt know the amount of trailers determind the amount of chains needed, i thought the company policy of 10 chains was for any stacked trailers....oh well i just did more work then i needed too.

Anyway then i checked out of the hotel and Headed north, and of course hit Dallas at rush hour AGAIN! i did that last friday too! I should have been at the hotel in gainesville, tx at 530pm......i didnt get here until 7pm! bumper to bumper traffic from the south side of dallas all the way to denton, tx :biggrin_2553:

Anyhoo they have a truck for me, its in the shop at the terminal here in gainesville......BUT the EARLYEST it'll be done and ready to go is monday. Soooo I get the weekend off to relax and reset my log book in the hotel (paid for by them of course) and i still have the rental car.

So monday morning i'll check out and go check out my truck, i still dont know the truck # or anything about the truck. I'm hopeing its clean and ready to go early monday morning. I dont even know what they're doing to it ( i didnt ask).
