    thanks Grizzly,
do you generally wait till failure to change it, or is it something can be determined upon examination whether it shoudl be changed during an inframe for example?

I think there is a pressure test that can be performed on them but that is not part of a normal inframe.

AgKits has a 3406 oilcooler for $496. pricey.
do they get gunked up or corroded so they dont dissipate heat as well?
doing all this research makes me want to do my own inframe work. build my own engine.

I would run too. He cant buy the kit for that money, and labor too?

Open the link and scroll to page 13, gives the price list for the rebuild kits. Its a pdf so it takes a minute to load.

here is a little secret i learned, buy your cat parts through a outside vender like peterbilt or kenworth etc. you can get them cheaper than buying straight from cat. also i bought my overhaul parts cheaper individually than buying a full rebuild kit.

When I do an overhaul I take the oil cooler apart and install the new o-rings and rod out each tube with a brazeing rod.

Well at 840,000 miles and having a head gasket blown at the rear you will need the block deck cut for shims and a liner puller and installer for the cylinder pack assemblies. I like the idea of no power tools except the mains torque to about 500 ft LBS and the rods about 300 FT LBS. I have had to do one or two but never without powertools. You will need a 3/4" impact to pull the mains down and really to install them unless you have a six foot 3/4 drive breaker bar. Head bolts would take all day without power tools. Find you a CAT dealer that will quote a base inframe overhaul with turbo, packs, damper, cyl head, and t-stats at a minimum. it is not necessary to replace injectors.
