I also would like to ask about per diem as it relates to the trucking industry. I understand the definition of per diem, but everything I read here seems to indicate that per diem is a bad thing. Could someone explain to me why that is or what I am missing?
Thanks for your help. -
When you take a part of your pay as per deim, it means that you don't have to pay income tax on it. Sounds like a good thing, right?
HOWEVER, that part of your income does not earn any Social Security. In other words, neither you NOR THE COMPANY has to pay the portion of the SS withholding. OK, now this STILL may sound like a good thing. But remember that your SS benefits are based on your earnings.
So when you get to the time in your life that you really NEED that money, it isn't there.
But it DOES save the employer money.
When you do your income tax at the end of the year, you can then declare a certain amount as per diem that you don't have to pay income tax on. But you have still paid your SS on this income.
I am sure that others, particularly Roadmedic could explain this a lot better and in more detail than I can. But at least this gives you a rough idea. -
I dropped a PM to Roadmedic about this topic. Hopefully he will weigh in on it when he gets the chance. It seems like there is more to this than just the Social Security stuff, but I can't remember what all it is.

About per diem, it is a moot point with SNI, because it is forced per diem for first 6 months. However, I have posted in another thread that I specifically laid it out for my accountant that does my taxes for the past 15 years, and FOR ME PERSONALLY, it was a great deal. In my case, because I have another side family business and so many kids as deductions, it was best for ME. As far as the Social security, that is based on a life time of earning, with some of the highest and lowest years "thrown out" if I read that correctly, and at this point basing anything on there actually being a social security by the time we get there, is a gamble at best.

It is something that really only benefits the company for the most part.
If the driver has nothing else to help on itemizing, it might be beneficial to them, but it should be looked at on an individual basis.
The bad things about per diem:
In the event that you are injured, workmen's compensation is then calculated on the reduced gross income earned, not the actual.
The same is true in the event of a wrongful death calculation as well.
With the reduced amount in the calculation, you receive a lower benefit. This in turn reduces the amount of the premium that the company pays toward your benefit.
If you have a retirement plan, most are figured on the reduced figure as well. This reduces the amount that the company is required to put in for the driver.
If you go and try to buy something large ticket or house, you have to explain why the income does not match and most of the time they just use the reduced earnings.
Just remember a company does nothing voluntary toward the benefit of driver that will cost them money. -

Next on the list for contact was Old Dominion. (They have a small terminal near me).
I attempted to make phone contact with the only recruiter I could find a name for. After a few calls with no return call I utilized the email for the recruiter listing on their website. After I couple of days I got a response to contact the local terminal for info on current openings.
I will do so in the next couple of days and post about progress (or lack thereof). -
Put an application in for the Con-Way apprentice program 1 week ago. Have not heard anything yet so followed up with an attempted call to the Con-Way recruiting department. Cannot get to a live person. Always end up routed to a recording that indicates that all applicants will be notified via email when the position is filled.
I suppose the good new is that I have not been notified yet, so hopefully I am still in the running.
