All too often in these situations there isn't even time to swerve . No matter what the situation if you leave your lane you are at fault for any damage you cause . You'd be surprised what carriers consider preventable . Reading these articles in CCJ is an eye opener . http://www.ccjdigital.com/preventable-or-not-one-way-ticket-to-bad-day-for-doe/

I have Tyrannosaurus Rex whistles on my truck. They apparently work very well.Hammer166 Thanks this.

What did you manage to have coming through your windshield? I realize it's a bird but what species though?
As for the origional question when it comes to deer or any other animal aside from maybe a buffalo they get the air horn and if they're too stupid to move they're getting splattered. I won't swerve I won't touch the brakes it will usually do more harm than good. I'd rather spend a few days in a rental truck while my tractor was in the body shop as opposed to risking putting myself and my rig in the ditch. I have hit one deer in my life it was in my pickup not my tractor but I've hit more coons, and oposum's than I can count even hit a coon that almost rolled my old pickup big old son of a gun. Oh I've hit more birds than I care to talk about as well they like my air horns and my hood guess they're blinded by the reflection in the chrome.
I look at it this way might cost you a few grand to get your truck fixed but it's not worth your life...about the only time I'm going to swerve for a deer is if it's a 12 point buck...and then I'm swerving to hit the SOB because that'd make one hell of a hood orniment

Deer Whistles will work if kept cleaned out. They can catch bugs and get stopped up.
I have been lucky deer wise. In Illinois Had a Deer standing on the white line, 2 Super Truckers passing me and the Deer never moved. Going west Bound in Texas, Deer in the middle of I 10 on the Dotted White line. Passed it on the right and a 4 wheeler passed it on the left.
I have traveled early hours of the AM and had deer come out infront of me Run down the Highway Cross over the Bridge into South Carolina and then leave the road. Slowed down and follwed it till he got out of the way. -
Oh I was traveling Northern direction while going fast as my Company truck would go and O/O passed me just got ahead of me he slammed on brakes and I saw parts flying off the front end of his truck. I did not see anything but I assume he hit a Deer then when he was passing my slow 62 mph governed truck. I called out to him but he did not answer and I did not see him pull over or I would have to assist him but I did lose him behind me for he slowed down big time.

The closest I've come to a deer was on a motorcycle and I chose going off into a field rather than hitting the deer. Some of our trucks have the whistles and some don't and they don't seem to react noticeably differently to either one.

I recently had a car driver try to pass me on the left and a deer ran out into the street right at him. I blew my highway horn and it ran back into the woods. That four wheeler was truly grateful.
