everybody's tastes are different, but i'd rather drive a volvo than anything else. they're quiet, comfortable, ride well, and the driver has a great view of everything.
a lot of trucks have split windshields with normal wiper systems, so during the winter a driver has to look through a lot of road spray where the two windshields meet. kenworth split windshields have the wipers set up to get rid of that "dead spot". naturally, i don't drive a kw or a volvo
as to shops, my ranking (several years out of date at this point) is:
1) helena
2) missoula
3) la mirada
4) dalton
i presume ferrin is still at helena, but did ernie retire at missoula?
and i hated everything about dalton, lol. the shop isn't that bad really.

I just called my Monday morning delivery asking if I could show up Sunday evening and a very nice lady said it was no problem and she would make sure the guard had my paperwork and dock number so I can back 'er in and be ready when they open!!!...So good so far!!!!
-
Was it everything you thought it would be? I start monday.

you got a good first load.
my first load the paperwork said saturday and no one was there when i showed up and had to wait till monday. i sat around all day and ended up dropping the trailer in front of their gate, went home, and came back haha. then they gave me the 1 of 5 docks that you had to blindside. good times.
i was worried about leaving it there so i came back sunday in my car to make sure no one had messed with it hahaha -
Great job on the first load! Remember to always, always get to the shipper/receiver as soon as possible! Someone may no show or for what ever reason they may get to unload/load you early. This is very crucial to you making money! Make sure to tell dispatch as soon as you leave the shipper when you will be to the receiver so that they can start working on another load for you. When you bump the dock make sure your DM has something lined up for you. This is how experienced drivers make the miles. You have to hustle! Drive safe man!
walstib, wulfman75, thePUNISHER and 2 others Thank this. -
Thanx Chompi!...I'm sitting at the Detroiter Travel Center now, I'll be heading over there around 7ish so I can get my $10 back to get in this place...Managed to back into a spot without hitting anything WOOHOO!
When I make my check call tonight I'll let my dispatcher know I should be ready early tomorrow for my next load...Wedge Thanks this. -
So how long do u plan on staying out with WS? Do they require a certain number of days, or can you look to go home after a week or so? I drive local dedicated here in Florida, but have also driven regionally for my current company staying out Monday through Friday, that's all I can take though. I give it up to you guys who can stomach staying out longer than that, not that you've done it yet but I seem to think you'll find your place out there just fine. You have an excitement for the job that leads me to believe that you're out there for the lifestyle of the job rather than just being out there to make ends meet. I know it's cliche', but this really is a lifestyle type career and it takes a certain breed of person to do what we do on a daily basis, locally, regionally, or OTR, there's too many guys out here just for a paycheck and they're the ones that give this industry a bad name in my opinion.

As long as I can get home for Xmas(if I don't quaify for bonus, if I do, I'm workin'!) I'll be happy, not pressed for home time...
Here I sit, backed against dock, doors open chillin' in the cab...I have to say, backing between 2 trailers at night was stressful and the guy to my left has his tractor ####ed my way so I had to do the same which has me very close to guy on my right...
I'm happy to have finally busted my 'truckin' cherry', already sent qualcomm messages so hopefully I can have a load waiting for me in the morning...I'm about 35 miles from MI terminal, I hope they have something there for me to head SOUTH with...I need to work my way towards L.A. to get APU fixed...Sleeping in an idling truck will be a new experience(one of many to face in this new endeavor)...Wedge Thanks this.
