My Galaxy DX66V is not a 10 meter radio, but every article online says yes it is.

    I am glad the receive being unaffected by a bad standing wave was clarified. It could be simplified even more by just using the example of a good antenna vs. a bad antenna and how it affects receive. Essentially it is the same thing. We all know when a better antenna is used for some reason we get to hear people from a lot longer distance than we do if we are using a hunk of coat hanger. I am truly impressed by the knowledge base of the people on here. Ain't drivers great!! Over the years I have purchased and built many antennas, so good some bad and a few worked great, but two come to mind were the best for my mobiles.

    One was the K-40 mag mount and the other was a quarter wave whip. Providing they were mounted in the middle of the mass of the vehicle the worked great, however if the antenna was on one end of the vehicle or the other the wave propagation was directional, just like a base beam antenna. Sometimes that can be somewhat fixed by what is called co-phasing. That is using two antennas, but that too is going to make the vehicle directional too. With the ant mounted on the front the unit will get better reception from the back and if the ant is mounted towards the rear, the vehicle will pick up better from in front of the unit. The best will always be one antenna right in the middle of the vehicle. That will allow a circular wave propagation in transmit and receive.

    I'm sometimes kidded for being so anal retentive, but there are times when a few miles one direction was important to me because I was not able to get to the person I wanted to talk with my co-phased mirror mount antennas on the truck. We tested a few times with a stock 12 watt pep sideband radio on a quiet night and were able to talk about 30 miles without problems and about 20 miles on AM and a tiny bit more on FM using a K-40 mag mount antenna and with the quarter wave whip we gained about five more miles. I live in Oregon and there are a lot of hills and mountains, anything gained by using better antennas was welcomed. The test was performed in the Willamette Valley south of Cottage Grove to near Corvallis Oregon. That was quite a distance. There were dead spots because of hills and other things in the way, but I thought the performance was very good. One was a Galaxy DX66V and the other was another import called the President HR2510.

    Personally I think they are both good quality consumer electronics. Again, these were stock radios. I set the power on both to 3.5 watts AM and FM and the 2510 12 watts on sideband. They work fine at those settings. Some day someone will go over the amount of power it takes to double the performance of four watts as far as decibel gain to another receiver X miles away. Maybe one of the other fellows out there knows the formula. I cannot remember it off the top of my head. I am getting old, no, I got old. lol What a great thread this is and such nice people. It had got to where I didn't turn on my radio or PC because I am getting tired of all the nonsense. It is refreshing to see such honest people helping each other.
