Sitting at the T/A on 20 just outside of Dallas. Unloaded in Lake Dallas this morning. Got the "no load today" message as I am sure most have. Good chance to get laundry done and catch on up some shows I've missed, but #### I hate sitting like this too long.

Baritone, your drop in Lake Dallas was just a quick swim across the lake from where I live! I am starting school at Richfield on sep 20. I have been following your progress on here and really appreciate you taking the time to post your experiences. How are you feeling about the per-diem pay so far? I am a ways out from making that decision, but just wondered what your real world experience has been so far? Other than what you have posted, what would be the most important advise you could give us prospective Millis employees? Thanks!
Loken Thanks this. -
Hey - thanks for the kind words. All I can really tell anyone thinking about Millis is.....they have done everything they said they would do and more. Per Diem is really up to you. It works for me since it allows me more on my check due to less taxes being taken out. But it may not be for everyone. It will be explained to you in training and then you can decide.
You'll like Richfield - good instructor there and that yard is all paved so no worry about dealing with the gravel dust all day.
Life out here is what you make of it. I have delt with good and bad. More good than bad for sure. I embrace people and learn from them instead of judging the like many others do. I do take a some crap from people at times due to I seem to dress different than most.
I mean I wear Kaki shorts and usually a golf shirt when loading and unloading - or when dealing with a customer. Now if I am just rolling all day and no other contact - it's shorts and a tee shirt. But I get comments from some like "are we playing golf today" or where which was is the beach. I doesnt bother me at all. I learned from a long career in corporate america that you dress the part and people will most likely take you more seriously. I am representing Millis when I visit a customer and no matter how they treat me - I will never give them a reason to say I was anything less than professional. But that's just me and how I was raised. It seems to work fine.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I have posted my first video on my YouTube Channel. (Daveb1092000) Just a way to show more of what my day(s) are like. More for my family and friends to see what I do than anything else.
Just remember - I am still learning and in my mind still training to do this job. Each day I learn something new and in no way am I experienced in this job enough to lead anyone. But ever single Millis driver I have met along the way have always helped, answered any question I have had and offered assistance if I needed it. When you hear others laughing on the cb cause your having trouble backing in a spot (and you will) - I'm the guy getting out of my truck to help you if I can. I know how that feels - trust me!
Stay safe and I'll look for you in Richfield if I get through there soon. I'm in 7114 if you happen to see me - hollar!Skydivedavec, Zangief, jenga9 and 1 other person Thank this. -

So though you're getting paid .05 less per mile with per diem you're netting more per paycheck than would have been with non per diem? Just wondering.
Oh btw, watched the video, pretty cool. Glad it's working for you!Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Exactly - but remember there are bonus levels for miles ran. So after 2K you get one, then at 2.5K and at 3K. So it works out actually.
Thanks for the props on the video - very new at this but it will get better.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Not to mention the perks they give you for taking per diem. Like Holiday pay.

At the end of the day it is all about the same on the per diem or non per diem. When i was on per diem it was a little different but i never could make any money on it. If you take straight pay just keep you log book pages and add them up at the end of the year for your per diem is all you have to do. The extra .05 cent a mile over the year makes up for all the bonuses you dont get.
Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
jenga9 you were asking about regional a while back well it should be a lot easier to get now since they have started running glass from Waco to Fort Worth.
-
How are the vacations paid or calculated for per diem vs non per diem? Are they the same? -
on per diem they take what you made the year before and divide it by 52 on straight pay you get a flat 500 dollars i believe
Skydivedavec Thanks this.
