@rabbiporkchop inspired me to record myself talking on my radio as I drove around. Got to hear how it sounds and how the range is around my home. Threw a radio and antenna on my parked van and put my phone there to record focusing on the S-meter.

    rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

Probably the most accurate way that I can think of would be to plug a cable into the external speaker Jack of the listening radio and run the other end of that cable directly to the input of a digital voice recorder so that you don't have the inaccuracies involved with the external speaker of the listening radio.
You would have to adjust the output volume of the listening radio down to a level acceptable for the input of the recorder. I have yet to do this but I'll probably do it pretty soon.

The guy that machined my shifter knob for my Chevy Tahoe is the same guy that builds antennas for the shop In Fontana California.

Definitely worth a try. I wonder how well it would work. Before I bought an external speaker, I plugged in the external speaker end of the CB radio into my car stereo via the auxiliary input. It's the same physical connection. It did not work well at all. Even with the radio volume as low as possible, it was extremely distorted. It also provided talk back, although I don't know how, since the radio did not have it built in and I didn't jump the PA Jack. I know the CB radio external speaker jack is designed to drive a speaker rated at approximately eight ohms. I don't know the exact specifications of a line level input without looking them up, although I think they generally work with 32 ohms and perhaps a lot less power. And of course the CB radio is mono.

If you power a radio in your vehicle without connecting coaxial cable to the radio you can use it as a receiver to receive your transmitted signal.
you can turn the RF power down on the transmitting radio and you can turn the RF gain down on the receiving radio and plug your audio cable directly into the external speaker Jack of the receiving radio and connect that cable directly to your laptop or a digital voice recorder to make the recording but you need to adjust the output levels so that it is not distorting.
    That's how this was done.

Best speaker - a cheap little surround sound speaker. I got a ton of these at an auction, some marked Sherwood, others Sony but all the same. Put a cord on them with a plug and installed them in about half the trucks I own. NO complaints yet. I've used a set of surround sound speakers here for my radio console, the clarity is amazing and believe me I've tried all kinds of communications speakers - the closest one are Motorola speakers made for SFBN railroad communications systems from the late 80's.

I finally got the recording levels adjusted correctly to eliminate distortion.

Finally built a new PTT noise cancelling condenser that goes from 20hz to 16000hz. Response is tapered within the radio itself.
