Better Idea, get a taco-truck and serve food to truckers. All you've got to do is beat the price of the truckstops (how hard can THAT be?) and better quality!
Also, when I was taking Greyhound across country (thanks to Orientaion) we had to have multi-hour layovers in small cities across the midwest. I think you could open a sandwich shop within walking distance of a bus terminal and offer better food at better prices. $7 for a pre-packaged baloney samdwich?!?
You can involve your kids and wife, and be home at a reasonable hour.
I mean, my dumb-a can't cook, so that option's out, ergo, I drive a truck.

Great idea! Cash business, he already knows how to cook, and "most" truck stop food resembles something you would be served on a stainless steel tray in the "big" house. And I can't speak for everyone else, But subway loses it's luster after a while.

Being "detail oriented" won't hurt you atall in specialized stuff like glass hauling. On the contrary it helps with load securement and care. You could very well wind up as one of their "stars" on the high end of the pay scale. Go for it.
Oh, and as an ex-chef; should your dispatcher give you grief you should invite him to "help" you in writing your new recipe book..... "1001 ways to serve Idiots". -
thanks, and i am hoping the detail obsession will work to my advantage. as far as comments to dispatchers, i should do ok, diplomacy is pretty important when you work with waitressess. not trying to p.o. any servers out there but they can be pretty difficult to deal with in the kitchen. of course as a chef we consider the ability to insult and demean people while they think your giving a compliment a special talent. also the ability to insult and demean so they know what your saying is pretty special too, oh, and sarcasm, being condesending, oh heck, were all pretty mean deep inside. and i guess to be honest, i have all the diplomacy of a thrown brick, but, i can keep my mouth shut, sometimes, i hope. lol.

After months of waiting, saving every bit of cash we could, the time is finaly here. I start school monday 2/7 and I am stoked! I have been studying my arse off, I have read the IL. State cdl manual 3 time now. I have taken every online test I can find. I know now the hard part now comes, but I feel if I put in the effort I'll reap the rewards. It won't be easy, but the things worth acheiving never are. I will keep ya all updated, and any ? I have you'll hear.
stay safe.

I sat in class at my local CC for a few days, drove around in the parking lot in a crappy old shop truck, practiced shifting and pre-trips, and said nah, I'll think about this deal a bit more.
Good luck! -
I think you have the right frame of mind going into this! And not like most people say im gonna get my cdl and drive a truck and get rich!! LOL keep us posted
oh and like somebody already said DO NOT LEASE PURCHASE!!!!! no matter how good they make it sound. -
Thanks for positiv thoughts, and definitly no lease purchase. although, after 5 years or so, if, things are going good I will think about buying a used tractor. I will look in the range of $15 to $25 k. something not used too hard and taken care of. in the meantime after school i'm going to get the books and start learning about diesels engines, air brake systems, ect. I know a local guy here that owns his own truck and thats how he did it. no payments means less overhead costs, like he says he still has maintainence, fuel, licence, all type of fees but without the truck payment he can actully make money. we'll see, alot can happen in 5 years and if things are going good where ever I'm at i might not want to take a risk. First things first, get my cdl, get a good job, learn what i need to make this life work, put my head down and drive.
stay safe

Yea get some experiance over 2 years before you consider buying a truck , it will make your life much easier in finding a job as a O/O and reasonable insurance prices.
You can get a good truck for about 20-25k mine is a 04 freightliner century with 540k when i bought it i paid 23,575 out the door with 10 BRAND NEW goodyear tires. I know you will do great!!! -
i am agreeing with everyone that said do not do it. i cant imagine giving up being with kids if i had them. you'd be better off finding a local job driving a straight truck. they're easier to land then a tractor trailer local job and pay isnt that bad. i'm making 31,200 a year salary, blue cross blue shield bennies, 500$ yearly bonus's, 6 paid holidays, 3 of which we work we're paid double on those days, 3 of which we get off and paid.
