JB this has been a very informative thread. I have just finished reading it and am glad that you have kept it so current. I have been working in a union electrical job for the last 7 years and lately things have been incredibly up and down with a lot of time on umployment. I have my valid Class A license (doubles, triples, and tanker) and have (thank to this thread) put in an application today with Prime. The only experience I have driving is with usually regular pickups pulling a trailer or air compressor and before the union gig I drove tow trucks for a AAA contractor for 6 years. Usually in an international 4300 flatbed. I know that doesn't compare to driving a rig AT ALL but do you think that Prime would give me any sort of credit for that background or that it would help me in any way? Again thank you for this thread and keep up the good work. Hope you get your truck back VERY soon.

 

No... it has nothing to do with driving an 80,000-pound class 8 CMV. You'll come in as a C-seat, and need to do 40,000 miles with a TnT trainer (+ or - depending on where you are.) It's to your benefit that you get this experience before they turn you loose in your own truck. Make sure you read this thread as well...

Your orientation week will be very similar to the PSD folks... scratch the part about getting your permit, and insert getting hooked up with a trainer on that Thursday/Friday instead of a CDL instructor. Do remember to bring shower clogs, be serious about everything, don't even think about being late, turn the cell phone off, and otherwise enjoy the ride!

 

Ok thank you Iron Pony. Yeah I do know it doesn't compare...even our line trucks and bucket trucks with a pole 40-75 feet long on a pole trailer don't compare at all. I did experience the difference personally. My uncle just retired from being an independent o/o and when I first got my permit he was gracious enough to take me with him for 3 trips to Texas and back from California. I did get some seat time in with him just so I wouldn't be as nervous when I took my behind the wheel test. I appreciate the input greatly and will check out that other thread right now. I'm also looking to go back after 5 and a half years off the road and about to renew my license on my own.......PRIME is my first choice, Gordon and going back to KLLM are next......Do I still need to give PRIME a 1 year commitment or pay their cdl/training fee? And, can anyone tell me where the PRIME Fontana CA drop yard is at? thanks in advance for any information.....what I've read here so far has been extremely helpful......

 

I saw an old lady with a walker, pass a prime truck once... Blew me away. Good Luck!!
