Roger that! I have noticed my eyes getting heavy after a few hours even though I'm not at all tired otherwise and slept good the night before. Any tips for that? Scanning objects seems to help temporarily.

Your body and your mind will slowly adjust. I had the same problem. I was puzzled about why I felt sleepy when I knew there was no reason. Make sure you have plenty of fresh air and don't get to comfortably warm. Watch your posture. Crank the seat so you are forced to sit up straight. Scanning is good if there's variety in it. Try not to think about how much longer you have to drive during your shift...just drive.

    AZS,

First, everything Oldnewbiegonnabe said is on the mark and eventually, your body will compensate over time. We become drowsy anytime our bodies experience a change in Melatonin production. These changes occur at sunrise and sunset and influence our sleep patterns.

Next, watch what you eat and drink. Coffee can work against you if you're sensitive to caffeine. Crashing from sugars (including starches) will make you drowsy. Certain foods (meats) contain Melatonin and can cause drowsiness after a short time. Eat light when you know you're going to drive. Save the heavier meal for when you go off duty.

If I feel myself becoming drowsy, I'll eat some crackers like Wheat Thins, or Cheez-Its, to get my metabolism going. Keep fingers moving; tap your feet; anything that will make your heart rate increase.

But like I said, if you find it's not working, get off the road and take a break. Don't risk it.

Good stuff guys, appreciate it. Thought part of it might be needing to build up the stamina.

AZS... glad to see you are on the road. I didn't get much chance to check in with TTR while I was out with my mentor so I am playing catch-up now. How much longer do you have on your 240? I wanted to go flatbed but Swift doesn't hire flatbed out of Memphis, so dry van it is. Actually I am kinda glad today seeing as it is -5* here in Illinois tonight.

I hope all is going well with your mentor and I absolutely know that you are dying for some elbow room about now. Soon enough you will have your very own truck... and that will make it all worth it. I look forward to following your adventures on the flatbedding side of things.

Stay warm and be careful out there...

Thanks Fewe! I drove from Indiana to Arkansas last night/this am so that puts me around 80 or so hours? I get along pretty well with him considering the space or lack of.

Just finished orientation and tarp and tie down class for flatbed in Phoenix last week, now I await a mentor, the DM said there were non available at this time but there are some due in, I am hoping to get a mentor shortly after the holiday's. Sooner would be nice but i am doubting that will happen guess it is just a waiting game now.

Reminds me of the service hurry up and wait.
Anyway good luck with your mentor.

Home now after driving 640 miles today. The thing I was not ready for is how different driving your car/truck is. whoa. No one ever talks about this but I was completely disoriented! ON the flatbed subject I had no idea how much I needed to get overalls, maybe it's tying down coils in December but #### I got my clothes dirty. Easily the dirtiest person that I saw. :biggrin_25525:

Anyway, easily over 100 hours now with the mentor, at first I was like 240 hours might not be enough as everything was coming a mile a minute, macros, directions, etc. but I'm slowly starting to feel the desire to be on my own. I guess I'm at home now till after the 3rd of Jan. since mentor took all that off. Great seeing family again but it feels weird not moving. Soon as I get used to this again it will be time to go out again of course.

Good work, AZS. You'll settle in at home pretty darn quick. Make sure you take the time to enjoy the holidays with the family. There's never enough of them. The truck will be waiting for you when your done.

You've knocked out 100 hrs., good for you. You'll be past half way before you know it.

    Enjoy the holidays.:biggrin_255:
