I went to the international dealership. He said there is an oil ring in the fitting and it most likely broke. 100+ to 300, depending if stuff breaks.

They don't make turbos for it anymore. A cummins reman is 2680. JM turbo is under 1400. Assuming it's a he551v for JM. Both have a 1 year warranty. He said the chuffing could be from the actuator going or fins starting to wear.

I'd rather stand at a safe distance and then let the insurance company deal with the aftermath. A grenade of any size is too dangerous to mess with. Surprising that it did not grenade and/or burst into flames.

Or use some Common Sense and
put the truck in the highest gear and ease off the clutch , choke the engine off before it gets to that point. I have had that happen 2 times in the last 30 yrs. Saved 2 engines by simply choking the engine off before it gets out of hand. It is not Rocket Science

I picked up some fuel that was contaminated with solvent. About 45 min down the road the truck started to die out and as soon as I hit a ramp the motor started to run away. Put it in 5th and eased out the clutch to kill the motor. They ended up replacing the injectors, rings, and one cylinder sleeve was galled. Lots of luck I think.

I've had one runaway and I stopped it with a clipboard over the turbo. When you're around trucks and heavy equipment all day every day you're always on guard for that kind of stuff. If it were my rig, I'd do my darndest to save it but once its at the point that the video started its finished anyways. May as well let it go. Company truck is a different story. I'd let it go.

I've thought about trying that. I don't really know how well the driveline would stand up to 550 hp/2050 ft-lbs torque. I guess its worth a shot though. Worst case you burn up a clutch and trash a transmission in addition to the engine if it doesn't hold.

I think investing a couple hundred bucks on a posi air shutoff is wise. Never know when a runaway will happen and you can kill that engine in seconds with just a switch in the cab.

Ive been driving a LOOONG time and I have seen a lot of stuff out on the road, but that video of a runaway diesel was a 1st! Ive never seen that before.Just goes to show you you learn something new every day.

OK Super Truckers...... Heres the Scenario:
Im driving my truck down the road and POW this happens....
1st What are the symptoms? How do I recognize that this happening, what happens for this to start?
2nd How much time do I have before critical mass?
3rd What is the procedure to stop it?
4th Can this be stopped before blowing up the engine?
5th What if you have dual breathers?
