If I were going to do what you are thinking of I would look for a small carrier rather than one of the super carriers. They seem to be doing better than some of the larger ones out there. My step son has a 7 year old international leased onto a small carrier here that runs frozen chickens all over the country. He goes to the west coast a lot and most trips are back to this general area. He runs all the miles he wants and doesn't have a qual comm spying on him.
My underthoughtout plan for the fall...

I found a company, and will be starting out as a co. driver, moving to o/o after 90 days. Thanks for all your advice, morbid predictions, and of course, insults =)

Good luck! I hope the absolute best for you in your grand new adventure! It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks you've wanted to do this for a long time. You always roll with the punches and it's been obvious on this forum that you're no quitter so if it doesn't work out you'll find another option for yourself. The thing is........in ten years you won't be saying "what if I'd tried".
Again..........GOOD LUCK!!!!

sweezly1 Thanks this. -
Just out of curiosity which carrier did you get on with?
Based on your comment it sounds like you are back in the "lease purchase" frame of mind.
I know Hill Bros offers a lease program but you have to be a company driver for 60 days before they will accept a driver into their lease program.
Care to offer any other details about your new plan? -
Come on man, the OP has been around here long enough!
In my experience and from what I've read, you don't get promoted to O/O. Especially not by a recruiter or salesman.
Please beat the odds! -
I am familiar with IROCUbabe's posts. I thought she had thrown in the towel on the lease purchase plans.
Not sure how else she would be able to work as a company driver for 90 days and then become an o/o. A Lease op I can see. An owner op? different animal altogether (although for tax purposes they are "considered" the same).
Of course I do not want to put words in her mouth so I will wait for her to respond with some more info. -
No, that "come on man" was more about shouting at the sky then addressing you lol.
Of course it's a lease purchase. I really wish she wouldn't. It's all the truck payment and then some, all the other responsibilities, enforced funds, escrow, and NONE of the control required to make ends meet. Us O/O's with only $1k payments can't even set aside those funds right now and still make a living, but at least we can still pull in $600 to $1k to ourselves in a week. With the extra payments and enforced funds there is nothing left, and often a negative paycheck. It just doesn't work.
How easy is it to get fired from "your" truck inside 4 or 5 years? Try hauling for someone else or getting a load on your own if they have nothing. See how much an owner you are. You're someone to throw all the bills at. It's not her that makes me mad, it's them. Their lies are simply beautiful and artistic on paper. -
No, its not a lease purchase, I am giving myself and my husband a few months to get back into the full time swing of teaming. I myself haven't even driven a truck period in the last 6 months, and after a lengthy discussion with family, friends, you guys, and him we came to the conclusion of a) what was causing issues in the relationship and are working on that end and b) that jumping into owner operator with a company right away is not a good idea, lease or no. So we have picked a company whom seems to be everything we are looking for.
The long nose pete, the 379 is my choice of truck that has been questioned by many here so I thought I'd offer you a bit more explanation. I have current been in the following trucks:
Pete 379
Freightliner Century
Pete 387
Volvo... something or other, the standard one like swift and raven have.
An Eagle International
A Kenworth T660
Of these trucks the only one I have ever had what I call a 'smooth' ride in is the Pete 379, it seems to be, in my opinion of course, better balanced on the road which makes sleeping while the truck is moving easier. I never ever ever had as bad a time sleeping while the truck is moving in the 379 I have a hell of a time sleeping in the shorter nosed trucks. Even if it was just me, I'd take a Pete as I'd eventually find someone to team with again.
That and I really like the trucks and know for a fact they can get good gas mileage if kept right. Not as good a most shortnoses but still... decent enough.
That said, as far as I know the company does not have a lease purchase option. Instead the plan is to save up over the next few months so we can purchase from a used dealership.
I will own the truck but I am not going the whole shebang and getting authority, I will be leasing it on to the company. At which point I am bringing my pets back out with me

That's a relief! As a team you got a real shot. Good for you, I had thought that was over.

Me too, I even had a lawyer draw up the divorce papers. Was pretty simple, we had our own stuff when we came into the relationship, and I just wanted my car my cat and my computers that I brought into the relationship he kept his house his boats his car anything we bought while together, and that was that. He broke down when it came down to the paper signing though. Had a big long talk. So far things have been pretty good since then. I am guardedly optimistic.
