Greetings from Australia.
I was searching the forum and found one year old thread. Figured id start my own.
I am undertaking a full rebuild of a 745 cpl ntc 855 Big Cam ( pretty standard cpl here)
So the engine shop has told me the block is WAYYY below the spec to skim the deck. Even is i did use a .010 gasket. So thats an anchor.
My question is this, I have a fully machined N14 block ready to go.
Same liners, same cam bearings, same everything almost.
Even the block height is the same. Squirters different... cant see that being a problem.
I saw another member say... Machining is needed. So if someone know what the machining requirements are?? that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again if you got this far.
N14 Block 855 build.

(1). You wanting to build a mechanical N14 with 855 Big Cam parts?
(2). Your N14 an early style with helix teeth on the crank , cam , oil pump, and accessory drive….? Later model N14 had straight cut teeth on the gears.mile marker 27, Dino soar, W923 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I am aware of the helical vs straight gears.
So if i use all the big cam parts,
Then I shouldn’t have a problem there.
Bc3 blocks are getting harder to find. and i have this block available. I am hoping it will work. -
The question is not if you are aware of the 2 style of gears, the question is does your N14 have helix or straight cut gears????
If it’s helix it will make it a little simpler to go where you are wanting to go.
The early N14 & 855 big cam had helix teeth….
If you want to go all mechanical as I did, you will need these parts from the big cam…
Camshaft
Cam followers
Push tubes
Heads
Rocker Boxes
Rocker covers
Use the N14 oil pump and oil cooler setup.mile marker 27, Dino soar and singlescrewshaker Thank this. -
My nt855 parts have the helical gears.
I stripped out a complete non stc 444.
So i have all of the associated parts.
i am really just hoping the heights and crank Will physically fit.
Thanks for the assistance -
855 Big Cam crank will not fit the N14
Use the N14 block / crank / liners & pistons.
The problem I found was interference between valves and pistons.
I machined the valve reliefs in the pistons and used the .010 thicker head gasket to help overcome that issue….BoxCarKidd, mile marker 27, Dino soar and 2 others Thank this. -
Are the valves the only problem?
I found the 444 pistons have a deeper valve recess and the same comp ratio.
will the crank physically not fit?
Or the valves are the issue. A 855 liner and a n14 liner are the same. 3055099.singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
No the 855 crank is not a direct fit in a N14 block.
singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
Ohh right. now that’s a major bummer.
Thankyou for clearing that up.singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
N14 has larger rod bearings, and larger wrist pins as well,
So if you are thinking of sticking 855 pistons in a N14 block….. need to head back to the drawing board, they are not a direct fit with N14 connecting rods…..mile marker 27 and singlescrewshaker Thank this.
