So I have an 02 379 with a red top celect plus, holset 1919 turbo and upgraded fuel pump. I spun the number 2 and 5 main bearings and now I'm looking at used replacements. I don't know squat about cummins. I've been a cat guy my whole trucking career. I was told the only difference between an n14 plus (black top) and an n14 celect plus (red top) was the ecm. is this true? Can I swap out a celect plus for just a plus? Am I going to be pissed down the road that I did that? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Early n14's had problems with fretting at the main bearing saddle. Beginning with engine serial# 11875596 changes were made to improve durability. That was early 1998 so look for something newer than that. Being a red top doesn't mean it's good or bad. The first n14's in a 460hp rating were red tops. I'd look for any 525hp rating built after 1998. Check the engine serial#
