N14 reversion to computer less 855

    Ok, so I bought a truck that had an N14, sans fi system, they want more for the parts than I paid for the truck, and I have read about all the problems they had with the injectors shorting out. Is there any reason I shouldn't put an 855 top end on the N14?it's my understanding that it's an easy conversion, maybe as simple as using 855 injectors.any info appreciated.

    It is no where close to that easy.

    It requires a camshaft change, then you would need the mechanical N14 top end along with the STC parts.

    I have N14 heads, so I would need straight 855 heads and cam?

    My personal Opinion is; It will be more trouble than It's worth. .!

    You will also have to change the fuel Pump & all the Throttle assembly.
    Once you remove the ECM Most of your gauges won't work.
    As has been mentioned you will also need to change the; cam, heads, Injectors & Fit all the STC components..

    Why not just swap engines to the old 855 big cam 3 or 4?

    You might just want to fix the N14. That’s where Cummins should have stopped. I wouldn’t trade an N14 for all the ISXs in the world.

    No, what about my post did you not understand, you think you have cost issues with what you have now, converting to mechanical is going to be way more cost and isn't something that just anyone can do because it takes some knowledge of these engines in the first place to even understand what all is needed.

    Getting a governor control into that cab and dealing with instrumentation would probably cost more in time and aggravation than the N14 parts.

    Most electronic engines of that age would have sensors feeding the gauges, very little goes thru the ecm and then to the cab, and depending on the truck make the cab may still have the provisions for mechanical throttle even with an electronic engine.
