Name, DOT, and unit number is all that is required. KY used to require it but no longer. I believe the only state that requires vin is CO, so you might as well do it now if you will ever go in as the vinyl will never match. Operated by is only required if there is more than one name on the truck.

Do you have intrastate authority in any states? Will need that on if you do.

I have never displayed VIN, but I only operate in the southeast.

CO only requires last eight of the VIN if you don't feel like stopping at every scale and taking your paperwork in with you to identify your truck.

KY doesn't require the KYU # anymore. And you don't need MC/ICC#.

All my truck has is the company name, the city/state, USDOT#, VIN# and unit#. I chose to put city/state on it (makes it look more professional to me). The VIN was because I thought maybe I might go through Colorado, but haven't yet in over a year. I've been through KY several times, and they've never said anything about the lack of a KYU.

Now, if you go to NY, you need the NY HUT sticker. Your company should provide that.

All I have is my company name and USDOT #. Can someone point me to the reg that requires a unit # to be displayed because I don't see it in the FMCSA regs and was previously unaware of it.

This probably varies by state. I have intrastate authority in Pennsylvania (PA PUC #) and it is NOT required if you also have interstate authority with the required USDOT marking.

i don't think there is a reg requiring unit number but we do it because shipper asked us to display the number and to display the trailer number inside the trailer too since they take pictures after the truck is loaded and at the receiver before its unloaded

I see. I have my trailer #'s on the front and rear and also inside of my van trailer. Sometimes I get weird looks when a shipper asks for my tractor # and I tell them "one" haha.

My NY HUT form shows my truck number listed. I was certain NY requires a unit number.
