For all you guys and gals who have been at this for awhile....which of the regulations that have come down the pike during your careers just make good sense? Why were they necessary in the first place? Have they been effective in saving lives?:biggrin_25514:

I thought this was a sarcastic thread, I was going to say the "No trucks in left lane". I really hate getting stuck behind loaded coal trucks when I'm empty because of stupid laws...

I would say that the DOT pre-trip regs definitely save lives as by the time you complete the necessary inspection after having waited to load and/or unload you will be out of hours, unable to drive legally. This greatly reduces the chance of being injured in any kind of accident whatsoever.

The CDL and D & A testing as introduced about 1991.

Some rules have been simplified such as Part 393.11 when it was aligned with the FMVSS. Not much sense in having one federal rule override another.

Drivers have to be careful what they wish for. I have reviewed both union/non-union and hourly/non-hourly carriers. I can attest it doesn't matter how a person is paid everyone wants more hours to earn more money.

OTR drivers going to hourly pay doesn't guarantee more money. It just changes the method you're paid.

    Be safe.

I am still waiting for my favorite to come out.
It was supposed to be out this year, due to an OOIDA lawsuit, but it is not here yet.
This is the driver training reg. that they are required to have the interim rule posted this year.
I think that making the schools actually teach a driver to drive, not just pass a test would have the largest safety gain of any reg in years. Much more impact than CSA2010, more than HOS changes (which I think are close to as safe as they will get now).
Close up all the company mills, or make them actually teach. Plus with an accredited school (as I hope they will have to be) the company's would not hold contracts on the students as they do now. Since at an accredited school you can get student loans and grants.

Drivers can no longer obtain licenses in multiple states. The databases are linked.

34 hr restart. Since when I can run out of hours in 5 days when I run the way I want, I like being able to get all my hours back quick.

    392.3 ill or fatigued operator.
Basically, they can't force me to drive if I am sick, fatigued, or any other cause. I have only had to quote that rule to a dispatcher once (of course, there has been more than 1 dickspatcher that I've used it on!) They always back down when I tell to look up the rule and get back to me in the morning. Of course they have their ways to retaliate too.

That one also allows a large interpretation to the DOT as well.
