What kind of narcolepsy? With or without cataplexy? I have not died in a truck crash or in a car crash. I do not have cataplexy. I have narcolepsy. Sleep issues are recognized as a disability. I am covered under the American with Disabilitys Act. FMLA qualified if I may add. I am treated by a licensed physican. And my CPAP treats my central sleep apnea with a minor case of obstructive apnea. The question 19 only states a guideline. Just as a fire cheif, may set a guideline that all door should be kept closed, incase of a fire. I am exempt from a health card, but I do have a Interstate Class-A CDL. And why are fire truck drivers exempt from having a CDL? Also emergency fuel truck driver? Medical Guideline number 19, might as well be Medical Regulation 19. Regardless of what is right or wrong, one size will likelihood fit all. I too have narcolepsy. I have had a class a cdl for 15 years. I have done delivery for most of those years and some long long rides as well. I am medicated for the condition. Never had a problem with dot medical card or pee test. Also, never admitted to anyone of my condition.
Hi, my son has had a CDL for 17 yrs and during that time he also had undiagnosed narcolepsy wo cataplexy. Never had an accident, never had any issues before the diagnosis, after the diagnosis and being treated he still doesn't have any issues. He did the wakefulness study and stayed awake in the 5 tests with no problem to which his neurologist was shocked that he could do that. Now because of the letter that the Doc wrote he is without a job, even though he passed everything that he had to pass. Because you guys know your limits and you know your disorder you are more careful and are alot safer than alot of non narcoleptics on the road. I am angry, and heart broken for this kid that all he wanted to do was drive truck. Which he did for almost 18 yrs and over a million miles with no problems. I get what the DOT and every one says and thinks, but it's controled. So sad for him.
