A person or a group of people can be elite in many different ways. Define "elite" in this case, won't you? Incidentally, if you cannot directly measure something and provide the unit of measure then anything offered here is merely opinion, purely subjective. You know, BS.

The whole IDEA of who is the "baddest" is juvenile. Every elite group has a very tough job to do,and to ask this question looking for a direct answer is,well, like asking,'Who is,was, the toughest boxer' and so on.. Anyone who is putting their LIFE on the line in the service of this country,IMHO,....is "BaaaaD."

I am an American{last time I looked} and can say what ever I want. In country we are banned from YouTube and many other sites which is fine w/ me. I will never try to tell these heroes how to do their job. And after someone is lost all internet is shut down including Fluor, DynCorp, KBR, Lockheed Martin, etc. They don't want the family to find out on the news or from a family friend.
The Middle East. Wow! Most of the locals I have met here and in 05-06' in Iraq were fairly decent people. The Iraqis did have a never ending hate for Israel, but that has been taught to them for a long time. Afghanistan is so far behind the rest of the some what civilized world. Iraq had very nice interstate type highway system. This place is about size of TX and has 3 main roads. 2 lanes. Helicopters are everywhere. Our base has had dirt strip that was used by C-130 and C-17 paved. Nearly done. Will be about 10,000' . They say it is for locals to travel. These poor bas tards couldn't buy a wagon load of dog ducus if it was a $. Except the warlord. :biggrin_25523: He lives about 400 yds from my front door. Here is one of many articles about him. According to base commander , it is just plain economics. It's cheaper to pay him to protect road than upkeep on Apaches, Blackhawks, etc for the month. That's Afghanistan.

They need to let these guys go after whoever they need to in whatever manner they deem best. They are constantly fighting w/one hand tied behind their backs. I feel this is BS and if it continues they should come home and get on w/their lives. They could easily clean up the Southern border and we might get a lot more bang for our buck. There are huge sums on cash everywhere as in all wars. Follow the money and you will find the answer to most bad things in life. Lot of people making a lot of money off this war. Except the military of course. Many of these men are on their 8-9th tour. Granted they normally do 6 month tours, but they are the ones going outside the wire and kicking in doors, negotiating with warlords/druglords, sitting on hot desert or freezing mountain waiting days to put laser on bad guys or take shot. How they can turn it on and off is beyond me.
I think the toughest people on our base are the Dr s and nurses. We have a plywood hut that looks bad. Inside is level 1 almost level 2 trauma center. Luckily few Americans get hurt. Lots of Afghan Army and Police come in messed up. With the time they have these people see 10-25 locals a day. Most are kids w/ little girls with their arms out of socket being most common. There is no Child Protective Service to call. Fathers can beat Hell out of their kids and all these docs can do is patch them up or help them die without pain. Had one little girl whose 3rd mother went nuts and put her into under ground bread oven. She lasted about 3 weeks. They did skin grafts and all they could but lost her. She did have a loving father. He sat there every day with love in his eyes. Normally he would have had to leave base at dusk. But they made exception for him. That one tore a lot of us up. But these real bad azzed Drs just keep calling them in and patching or bagging them up. Talk about SPECIAL FORCES. Don't see how they can take that the way they do.
If you have any questions I will be around till Tuesday. I will try to tell you what I can. Please always keep our military in your heart and prayers. They deserve it and more.

Well if you are speaking of the original question--then yes the answers are all purely subjective--just one person/s opinion--BUT if you are referring to any US MILITARY Special Operations Unit--(and I truly hope you aren't trying to be derogatory!)--and need measurable proof of their abilities--ask yourself this--Am I able to state my opinions in an open forum--in this republic?
But if in fact someone is trying to find out just how ###### the typical special operator is--then I can point you to a few who would be happy to demonstrate for you!

What did you mean about those doing the "grunt" work..-With one arm tied behind their back? I have not heard that since the Viet Nam War..(which I was not a part of) but remember my Sergeants talking about it while they were there.

What I know of Delta Force comes from Green Berets. They are both at Ft Bragg NC. According to the 3rd Group guys here , 1st Group used to be Delta but has since been spun off. They say even if they go into their place they are checked out . Anyone can apply if they are SEAL, SF, etc. Army SF has made it easier for certain people who's skills they need to get beret. Still have to make cut and 18 month training. But Ranger school is not mandatory for some positions. Our Lt Col and his Command Sgt Major remind the newer guys that when they went through it was much harder and required extensive swimming, Ranger school and other training. The younger ones will mock them and say "and you walked 15 miles uphill both ways to school". They have great camaraderie.

I do not know how old you are..but if you are young(which I think you are) join the military.and see if,in fact, you "qualify"for one of the units mentioned on this thread, the BEST way to finding the TRUE definition of ELITE...Really,No B.S.

Sounds like my high school experience, except it was only 1.5 miles one way. But it was uphill both ways!:biggrin_2559:

On a more serious note, I know for a cold fact that I wouldn't want any member of the the US Special Forces annoyed at me. Probably wouldn't be an experience that I would survive. I have the greatest respect for all of our soldiers, and for the job they do. I just happen to be a fan of the SEALs because an old friend of mine from high school planned on trying out for the teams. Don't know if he made it or not, cause I haven't seen him since he shipped out back in '94. His younger brother said he made it in, but couldn't confirm it.

To any soldiers who found my comments to be juvenile, my apologies. I was intending to be humorous.

To any civilians who found my comments to be juvenile, bugger off! Spec ops soldiers and astronauts were the greatest heros and role models when I was growing up.

We have a 7th Group ODA team here. Should be in Central/South America but like all wind up here. Team SGT is real nice guy. Into mixed martial arts. Had a civilian come to work here for my company. All he could do was talk about how he was into MMA and would kick anyone's arse. Finally took him to meet Master Sgt. Wasn't so tough when looking the real deal in the eye. Guess it hit him that when out in the field or real world these guys don't fight by any rules and you are likely to lose an eye, kidney, or worse.:biggrin_2551: Master Sgt got to know him and invited him to come to weekly training they do w/ Aussies, Slovakians, Dutch, and others that show up. He has mellowed out a lot and says he is learning many different things. Got to shut up to listen.
