If you projected this attitude to me as your Mentor...there would be no yelling or arguing...you would be off my truck in a heart beat!

How the student projects himself, both socially and educationally has a great deal to do with how they will learn new skills, get rid of bad habits, and interact with the Mentor and office/dock workers. I'm not saying be a little lamb and take everything that is dished out...but you need to admit to yourself that you are new to this industry, a new driver, and trying to, along with wanting to, to learn whatever the Mentor or those with more experience have to offer.

Yes, it should be given with respect, as well as accepted with respect!

and what attitude is that, that I want to learn and be taught?.. without being belittled and screamed at?..if thats an attitude that would get me off your truck, then i would be off your truck, If your one whos going to disrespect me by calling me a moron every 5 minutes, tell me a a ##### cause i want to tell my kids goodnight and then tell me every question I ask is stupid..not to mention the non stop yelling about every little thing from having the heat up to high to why did i only drive 62 through the peas soup fog when the truck will do 64..etc etc...tell me you would put up with that without getting a little pissed off..and ill tell you your a liar...I am with the mentor to learn..because your right im new to the industry, I am not with a mentor to be treated unprofessionally and rudely..nor will i tolerate being treated as such from a mentor, a student, a boss, or anyone else for that matter..I by no means, project myself as some ######, who knows everything, but i do project myself as confident and unwilling to put up with BS behavior.

BTW the things he was yelling about had nothing to do with the Job, as a matter of fact he told me a lot that I was a very good driver, except for downshifting into 2nd gear when comming to a stop, which I admit I have a hard time doing and tend to just push the clutch in and stop. However I took his instruction about driving and the job without question, because he knows how to do it and I dont, and oddly enough he didnt scream at me about driving..except that I wouldnt drive as fast as he wanted me to go, and that i ground second in the truck stop parking lots..and whether it was because he really thought it, or because he just didnt want to drive much, he had me start teaming after 20 hours becau8se he said I was good enough to do it..

    Really? You call this:
not projecting yourself as some ######? That your going to start a fight?

You need to re-read my posts....the whole thing....and lose the tough guy approach. Open your mind, not your fighting ability...you might learn more!

Did you consider talking to him about minding his own business...let him know your boundaries, he probably laid out some "rules on the truck" to you....you have equal opportunity to set your rules as well. If either of you can't abide by, and respect each other and the rules...then you need to part ways!

Down shift to 2nd? You can't be serious! Maybe in truck school while just learning....but in a truck stop?

    That Mentor shouldn't be!

    xlsdraw Thanks this.

I tried talking to him several times about the situation, and he continued, and that was why I decided to part ways because i didnt want to loose my temper and do something like kick his ###, and I felt it comming on. I tried very hard to be a good student and respect his truck rules, and the problems wernt due to that, for example here is an actual conversation I had with him.

quallcomm beeps we have a load assignment..he reads it.

me: so were we going to next?
    mentor: does it really matter?
me: Not really, but id like to get out the atlas and plan a route to get there
mentor: are you a ####### moron, you dont need the atlass, the quallcomm has directions and GPS
me: I understand that, but id like to have some general idea of where im going so in case the qualcomm stops working.
mentor: Why do you insist on making everything harder than it has to be
me: because i want to learn the right way, in case im ever in a situation where i need to know.
mentor:well if you cant figure out how to read a ####### map then your a ####### moron, you shouldnt need any practice at that, every one of you idiots thinks you need to practice all the BS they teach you in school, its a waste of time.
me: well I guess once im out here and have more experiance i may not need a map, but for right now id like to learn to use it better.
mentor: Stop worring about stupid #### like that and just drive.
    me: ok then.

or another one that went like this.

mentor: Why did we only make 560 miles last night, i wanted you to drive at least 620!
me: Because the fog was so thick I could not see 10 feet in front of the truck, so I slowed down some.
mentor: I dont care about the fog, you have to drive at least 62 miles per hour at all times while on the highway or we wont make enough miles this week.
    me: enough miles for what?
mentor:for me to make my truck payment and cover fule costs.
me: Ill do my best, but im not driving in a way I feel unsafe
mentor: youll drive however I tell you too you ####### moron, your not out here for a pleasure cruise or a joy ride..your here to work.
me: I didnt say I was here for a joy ride, I said I wasnt going to drive in an unsafe manner, when I dont feel comfortable.
mentor: Your a ####### #####, suck it up and just drive the Gad #### truck the way I tell you to.

    or this one

Me: How do I adjust tandems in the back to make sure my axles arnt too heavy
mentor: you pull the pin and drive forward or backwards.
me: i understand that part, but do the holes have a certain numbr of pounds that they adjust?
mentor: you ask too many stupid ####### questions, just watch and do what I do and you will be fine.
me: I am watching you, but watching doesnt tell me how many lbs per hole, how do i know if I need to move 3 holes or 6 holes?
mentor: Jesus Christ Quit asking me questions
me: arnt you here to teach me how to do this and answere my questions
mentor: Shut the #### up, (to himself) I dont know why I take these ####### morons..i regret it every time..

and these types of conversations were everyday..and they started the very first day I was with the guy...and it wasnt just a normal toned conversation, he was screaming the whole time and using many more derogatory words that what I put here.

far from it..i dont care to run the show, i was merely making some observations from a students point of view that might help cut down on turn over at the company, how many guys come out and quit because of bad experiances with mentors?..maybe if they had a more active role in picking who they are with that would help to cut down on the problems..its not my call or nor do I want to "run the show"..just a thought is all.

I wouldn't ride around with someone yelling at me all the time..If I wanted to hear a bunch of yelling and cursing I could just stay home with my wife!

Seriously though, people should treat others with some respect...If they screw up (as long as there is no sheet metal involved), tell them they screwed up and this is how it should be done. No one is going to learn anything of value being yelled at and belittled constantly.

Heck, I had Drill Instructors that never talked to me the way BusMan is decribing his trainer.
