1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Yeah...me and the rest of the free world.

So I'm a total newb to this industry. I have a CDL learner permit, and intend to get my CDL in the next few weeks. I have an inside line on a decent regional job having me home 3-4 days per week AFTER I get a few months experience.

So my question is...do I just throw a dart and eat whatever crap sandwich I'm served up by whatever company gets hit by the dart? If I already have my CDL, what kind of fees could I get stuck with? Would I have to pay for a company's driver school? Physical? Drug screen?

I live in Mid MI and think that it would be nifty neat-o if I could hook up with a company that's within 100 miles so that I may be able to get home once in a while (yeah right...I know...but there's always that dream). I see postings that PAM runs on Monster for drivers out of Flint, but I'm not sure what exactly that means.

How do I go about this? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry to post stupid crap, but...well, it is what it is I guess.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but try Schnieder National in Green Bay. They run 1/2 dozen training schools scattered all over. The 3-week class is $7900, but if you sign a 1 year contract to work for them at $0.29/mi, they will forgive the training fees and pay for all the tests. If you quit OR get fired 1 day before the year is up, they will hunt you down like a dog to get their $7900.

If you stay, and keep an absolutely perfect record, including logs and performance, you'll get about a penny a year raise until you hit $0.42/mi max pay.

    Drug/Alch test - $40 to $99, DOT Phys - $99 to $250.

Another Idea: IF you can pass the driving test, the parking test, and get your CDL, see if you can find an o/o willing to team with you, train you, and maybe pay you $300-$500 a week.

best of luck, cause right now... the industry sucks!
