I am running a daycab in a slip-seat operation. I'm trying to find a good portable CB for this winter. Most of the whip antenna's on these old trucks are shot so I am looking for something strong without adding external antenna's to it. Not looking for anything too fancy, 1 mile radius will do for customers at the yard and emergency situations. Thanks.

I have one that I use in the 4 wheeler when I am home, I forget which model Cobra it is, has the weather channels too. They are severely limited by having the antenna inside the vehicle, so any kind of cable from the walkie talkie to a window clip on mount or external antenna will help a ton! Mine also picks up a lot of electrical whine from using a lighter socket for power.

I bought a Midland at Walmart a few years ago. It has rechargeable batteries that you'll either have to charge at home or get a small inverter for, but it reaches out about four miles line-of-sight. It does okay in hills, to, just not quite as far. It was $89 when I bought it.

It's the antenna not the radio that is the downfall of HT's

I had one I used, that sounds about similar. To cure the antenna problem, I looked up a good radio guy, or even a HAM radio shop, can modify you up to a ten mile reach, though the battery takes a hit. Mine served great use running logs out of the NC hills years ago. Good luck with it.

That Midland is set up to plug into the truck's antenna system, too...as long as the coax is long enough. You might have to get a short extension. I hadn't tried mine that way because it worked just fine for me the way it was.

Since he says the external anteana is shot....get an extension cord for the antenna, and use a suction cup to stick the antenna to the windshield (interior), or some other better location....with the portable sitting on the seat, it will have nearly a 0 range due to its location...an external antenna and maybe a vise-grip mount on the mirror might be best....

I've considered a walkie talkie style radio just for going on long extended trips and such. The wife isn't too big on me hard mounting a radio plus I'm thinking about getting out of it all together and maybe just having that small radio just for trips only and nothing other than.

With that said, do the walkie talkie style radios have a SO-239 connector for adding an external antenna?
