Central State apportioned tag agency in Avon Park is the best. Email them everything they ask for ahead of time, and they’ll let you know if you’re missing anything. It’s far, far less of a wait than St Pete.

To get your plate, since you’ll be leasing on to someone, you’ll need this in addition to the standard stuff.
    Copy of lease
Long form insurance certificate from motor carrier with your vin listed in comments.
The website will list everything you need, but you might want to get started on those two items.
Those two trip people up a lot.

    Rayfigz24 and singlescrewshaker Thank this.

Yep. This is correct. Florida will charge you 6% on a purchased truck. The exception is if you've owned the truck for more than a year and are transferring the registration to Florida.

I heard a rumor... that if you lease on with a carrier in a rolling stock state, you can have your registration processed there and avoid the tax.

Then, after a year, move it over.

It’s all about the title, not the registration. If you could avoid titling it in FL, you’d be good to go. It’s easy to do on trailers (ME and OK), but not trucks.

Ok, makes sense. I bought my truck in Nebraska and it was titled there. I paid no sales tax even though I live in Fl.

Why don't people ask these things BEFORE they look for a truck?

Go to Tallahassee and get it done.

Most important is that you have a signed odometer statement from the dealer on their letterhead...live ink no copies. This will ruin your trip there if you don’t have it.

You will be required to pay sales tax before you even get to apply for a tag.

You will need a certificate of insurance for your bobtail / non trucking liability insurance. Also you need a signed lease with the company you are leasing onto.. and a certificate of their insurance. Trust me, you’re going nowhere without these items..

Plan on $1,500 ish for the tag and a few bucks to set up your IFTA. You won’t get the decals anywhere but Tallahassee so that’s why I suggested going there.

There is a long list of items you’ll need on their website..

Lastly, get there early and plan on being there all day.

Make sure you bring everything needed or you’ll be going home feeling like a beaten dog.

Glad I don’t live in Florida. What a rip off. Move to Georgia and title it there.

    Bobtail isn’t required.
